fetch using magnet link

Postby tsccmo » Tue Sep 18, 2007 10:08 pm

Is it possible to implement the fetch magnet link?

[...]Since it refers to a file based on content or metadata, rather than by location, a magnet link can be considered a kind of URN (as opposed to the more common URLs). Although it could be used for other applications, it is particularly useful in a peer-to-peer context, because it allows resources to be referenced without the need for a continuously available host.[...]

I don't think so.
AFAIK only Azureus supports this magnet links, because Azureus uses its own version of DHT.
But Transmission dosen't support DHT at all.

I'd like to bump this topic now that Transmission has DHT. :)

This is a bit more important now, with blueberry closing down its tracker and trying to get everyone to use magnet links:

Edit: I like the word changing system :)

This is way more important now when Thepiratebay decided to only use magnet links.

I'm using the Tiger version of Transmission (v1.54).
Is it possible to update the Tiger version so that it supports magnetlinks?
PLEASE try.
Each time I try to add a magnetlink I get an error saying that it can't find the host,
no matter what magnetlink I try.

We don't currently support magnet links in the released 1.7 series, so asking for it in older version is especially unlikely.

I sympathise with you, but since 1.5x doesn't support DHT, retrofitting magnet links would be a big undertaking.

If some DIYer out there using 1.5x wants to do the code for this retrofit, please let me know.

We've unfrozen 1.80 to add magnet links to the TODO list.

I signed up just to say that I agree that implementing magnet links is now incredibly important. If theres anything I can do to help (I'm know some basic C++), let me know. :)

We've already said it will be in the next release, and Transmission ALREADY supports DHT and PEX? And I really don't care that you registered and posted just to whine that we're not meeting your needs....

I think there is some confusion.

Transmission supports trackerless (DHT) torrents fine, and has done so since 1.70.

A large torrent hosting site have shut their tracker, but they're still offering .torrent files for download. Their .torrent files will work fine with Transmission 1.70 and later, tracker or no tracker.

This thread is about something different. With a magnet link, you don't even download a .torrent file -- you simply pass your BitTorrent client the magnet link, and the client will use the magic of the DHT to find a copy of the .torrent. Since magnets links are easier to host than .torrent files (you can e.g. paste them in a forum), this is a big win, but not as big as some people in this thread make it to be.

So please chill out.

I guess the biggest reason that people are suddenly interested in magnet links is because of the announcement made earlier today by a prominent tracker. It's not a totally big deal at the moment, but of course it'll eventually grow to be something quite important.
