Port Forwarding: OS X 10.5.7/Zyxel P-660R-ELNK/Earthlink

Postby jayC » Mon Jun 01, 2009 3:55 pm

OS: Mac OS X 10.5.7
Transmission v 1.61 (8382)
ISP: Earthlink (1.5 mbps DSL service)
Modem/Router: Zyxel P-660R-ELNK (It was P-660R-D1, but became P-660R-ELNK after firmware P-660R-D1_3.40(AGE.3)C0 upgrade)

Connection:
Outside Phone Line <--> Zyxel P-660R-ELNK Modem/Router <--> Mac Pro
(split) |___________ <--> telephone

1. Router set to UPnP active:
Image

2. Security/Firewall set to accept incoming connection for Transmission:
Image

3. Transmission set to automatic map random port, e.g., 40575:
Image

4. Transmission log shows port 40575 is open for socket 8 and 9:
Image

5. Firewall log confirms that it's allowing incoming connection requests:
Image

6. Network Utility / Scan Port indicates port 40575 is open:
Image

7. Internal IP Address 192.168.1.33 is manually set:
Image

8. However, CanYouSeeMe.org mistakenly (I believe) uses the external IP Address, XX.230.149.204, assigned by Earthlink as it tests the port:
Image

9. Also ran PFPortChecker within Crossover to test port 40575: TCP [CLOSED]; UDP [OPEN]:

I also tried disabling UPnP and configured manual Port Forwarding in the router, but to no avail.

=================
Question: Is the port open or not? If not, how can I get it open?

Note: Prior to 10.5.x, the port which was set as static, was open. At the moment, only x-Torrent (http://www.xtorrentp2p.com/) shows port open in Preferences. BitTorrent, uTorrent (Mac beta) both show closed/no connection. Now that it is "closed?", my download rate seems to be much lower. I ususllay get 150 K, but now only around 50K.

Thanks for reading and your help.

could you try to uncheck the checkbox with automaticcly map ports? and I can't see you port forwarding your router (search in the in-build help or at track.transmissionbt.com for the guide)

The following are steps I took to set Port Forwarding manually:

1. Unchecked modem UPnP:
Image

2. Set Modem NAT SUA Only (default):
Image

3. Set Port Forwarding with Port 50004 for Transmission and IP Address: 192.168.1.33:
Image

4. Set port 50004 manually on Transmission, unchecked Random port and Automatically map port. Note that "Port is closed":
Image

5. Transmission Message Log indicated port 5004 opened:
Image

6. Firewall log also indicated Transmission is listening on port 50004:
Image

7. Port Scan confirmed port 50004 opened:
Image

8. However, PFPortChecker again showed TCP [CLOSED]; UDP {OPEN} for port 50004:
Image

9. A while later, Firewall log showed and allowed Transmission incoming connections:
Image

10. Then, Transmission checked port 50004 is STILL open:
Image

11. As mentioned in last message, transfer rate is only 52K/30K when it is set to unlimited/30K:

===========
There you have it. What went wrong?

Thanks.

An Update:

I started up from an external HD with a clean installed 10.5.7, with settings migrated from default internal startup disk, which was upgraded from 10.4.x. Port shows open. Firewall log shows incomig connections.

Also, if I started with the internal HD with a new account, the problem still exisits. So, that led me to believe the problem is at the system level, rather than the user level.
