0.91 Causes CPU run at full speed in Leopard

Postby bemike » Tue Oct 30, 2007 9:29 pm

I just found that Transmission 0.91 might cause a process "quick look server" in Leopard consume 100%-120% of CPU capacity. I didn't do a lot experiments, just some, so I'm not 100% sure, can somebody confirm this?

Yes bemike, same problem here, my Mac Mini G4 with Leopard 10.5.0 is running hot because of the “Quick Look Server” process using ALL available CPU power, though not continuesly. The Activity Monitor can quit the process, but that's followed by an automatic restart of the “Quick Look Server”. It seems however to be related to Transmission (0.93). Not running Transmission = no “Quick Look Server” running crazy. My guess is that the “Quick Look Server” is trying to index the bittorrent files while they are downloading..

so far, i have no issues like this happening on my macbook c2d running leopard and transmission 0.93 (3811)...

transmission is using about 3% cpu, and my CPU is 90% idle.

Can you try a nightly build (http://transmission.xpjets.com/) and see if it's any better?

I confirm that after installing the latest nightly build, the problem persists.

My MacBook Pro's fans have been really loud at night, when most of my BT downloading takes place. So much so that I've had to quit Transmission a few times, just to be able to sleep.

Hopefully we can see a fix for this issue soon, as I refuse to use anything but Transmission.

Mikel: is the quicklook server using a high amount of cpu?

Any one else try a nightly?

Yeah, around 120% to 130%. I'll try to take a quick snapshot of the activity monitor next time it happens.

I'll have to look into this more. Mikel: are your downloads mostly single-files or folders of files?

It's actually happening right now, and the lag is almost unbearable. Here's what it looks like (it gets even worse sometimes):

My downloads (I only have two at the moment) are generally both folders and individual files.

Looking into it, I'm not sure if there's a public interface for disabling quick look checking on files; the nightlies have it for time machine, however. I will look into it.

a clue into quick look / transmission problem

Postby hoco » Thu Nov 22, 2007 11:22 pm

I can confirm that quicklook racks up a lot of CPU time when the files downloaded are on the root drive, but when the files being downloaded are on an external drive, this doesn't seem to happen.

I have a c2duo mbp with leopard and i am seeing transmission eat up 100-120% of my cpu, my cpu temp even hit 190F so i stopped running transmission for fear of burning out my cpu or wearing out my fans (because i used to leave transmission on 24/7). I am a big fan of transmission and hope this bug gets fixed soon, i tried todays nightly build but it didn't solve the issue.

how to move a download...

Postby hoco » Thu Nov 22, 2007 11:30 pm

If you'd like to move a currently-running download, here's a way to do it on OS X (sorry if this is repeated elsewhere).

1) Quit transmission
2) Copy the download files and folders to the new location (e.g. to an external drive)
3) Edit '/Users/yourname/library/Application Support/Transmission/Transfers.plist' by double-clicking it. It will summon the 'Property List Editor'
4) Click the arrow by 'Root'
5) Click each of the arrows that show up and edit the value of 'DownloadFolder' so that it is the path to the folder where you have copied the existing downloads -- the folder that contains your downloads, not the download itself
6) When you are done editing all the 'DownloadFolder' attributes, then save from the File Menu and quit.
7) Start up Transmission again. It should pick up right where it left off. :-)
