Transmission

Hi, I am fairly new to macs and not really sure on how this is all supposed to work. On my PC I could run a bittorent client and surf the web and my internet would just be slow. When I open transmission my internet is completely unresponsive... I read the FAQ and couldn't come across any reasoning ...
