I just realized that the text files are converted to bin files upon restarting transmission(as stated above). Thanks for all the help I think I'm all set now.

No, you put the unzipped file (double-click the .gz file) in the blocklist folder and restart Transmission, not the computer. To get the .gz file on to your Desktop (or Download location), you paste the URL in to your browser address bar and hit enter. If it loads as a browser page instead of ...

And secondly, do I just go into the transmission folder and delete all the bins and start from scratch each time?

I followed this format from a previous poster:

Update whenever you feel it is prudent. I use a 5 day cycle. For manual update just put the lists in text form in to the blocklist ...
