OK, so you have UPnP enabled on the router. On your client-not the router, if you don't allow incoming connections in the firewall settings, your computers firewall may be blocking the port. I struggled with this issue too. What worked for me was to open system preferences-security/privacy-firewall. You will need to add your VPN provider to allow incoming connections to the MAC Firewall.
This assumes you already have configured UPnP on your router.
