It is merely a check which has to be run from the outside of your local network. The only 'bad' thing about it is that if that site is down, you will get this friendly message.
So, again, the check is completely unrelated to the core of Transmission and is mere informative.

Did you guys confirm that the port is actually closed? (canyouseeme.org)
Because "unable to check port status" doesn't mean either closed or open. Just unable to reach the port check website. This should not affect speeds, and probably doesn't.

Ryoujin already hinted at this before, but you may want to choose a different port then your bf. If he had an open port before, it could be closed for the both of you because both your computers are requesting that port from the router. Just increase the number by 20 or so.
