VPN vs "Encryption required"

Post by cdhowse »

Hi, this is my first post to the forum. I think I have a pretty simple question.
If I set Transmission's preferences under Privacy to "Require encryption", will I need a VPN?

Thanks,
CD

It depends on your goals. BT encryption will prevent people from determining the particular torrents you're downloading, but won't stop your ISP from identifying (and potentially blocking or throttling) BT traffic. See e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitTorren ... encryption for some more information.

Would a VPN and "Require encryption" be the best case scenario?

Thank you kindly, and Happy New Year!!

Again, you didn't state your goals, so there's no "best" here, but if you value your privacy I'd say VPN is always a good option, especially since it would also protect connections that aren't covered by BT encryption, like tracker communication.
