Furthermore, although Transmission is the default (official?) BitTorrent client for Ubuntu, the last version announced, in main page of this web (1.80), is not available in official repositories.
Ubuntu only update between releases if there's a security issue. I will try to keep the above PPA up to date. If I'm late, please contact me.
1.82 wil be ready in a few minutes, depending on how long the compile cue is...
All you talk only about the ubuntu official repositories, but what do you think of the launchpad official repositories listed on this site (http://www.transmissionbt.com/download.php) and that, however, one is obsolete and the other is empty?
It is because of the lac of updates in those repos I made my packages.
The packaging is based on the official packages so they should be quite similar to the official ubuntu-packages, only with newer sources
Updated with version 1.83 in the stable repo, the beta repo has svn10040, which I guess is the one that became 1.83…
Renamed the binary packages in the beta repo to transmission-svn, transmission-svn-common, transmission-svn-gtk etc. This means you can add both repos and not be bothered with (possibly broken) svn builds replacing release builds.
The two should NOT be installed at the same time tho, as they contain files with the same path/names.
Maybe I will try and change that someday soon, rename the binary executables in the svn package or something.

Some news on the state of Transmission packages in Ubuntu.
Firstly, BalleClorin has joined me and hopefully with his help we can avoid lagging behind as badly as we did during 1.80 cycle.
Also all three repositories (i.e. stable, beta and nightly) were moved to the single location: https://edge.launchpad.net/~transmissionbt/ and as you can see we have nightly builds running for lucid, karmic and hardy at the moment.
Sorry for a delay.
