192.168.1.[XX] exceeds the max. number of session per host!

Postby owlglass » Sat Sep 25, 2010 9:07 am

When I run Transmission, my router log keeps saying "192.168.1.35 exceeds the max. number of session per host!" -- I get about 50 of these messages a minute.

And -- probably a related issue -- when I've just restarted the router, the port I use for Transmission is open, but after a while it closes.

In the Transmission preferences, I've got Global maximum connections set to 200 peers and Maximum connections for new transfers to 60 peers. Use peer exchange and Use distributed hash table are both checked. Randomize port on launch is unchecked; Automatically map port is checked.

My router is a ZyXEL P-2602HWL-D1A 3.40.

All suggestions appreciated!

Try reducing 'Global maximum connections'.

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately it made no difference. Even with the Global maximum connections set to 1 I still get the "192.168.1.35 exceeds the max. number of session per host!" message and with the same frequency.

Turn off DHT.

Unfortunately, I was a bit too quick with my previous assessment. The problem persists.

I tried uTorrent to see if there was any difference – and there was. I'm still hoping for a solution for Transmission though, as I much prefer it to any other bittorrent client I've tried.

i don't have your router but this info turned up on a quick google search..

http://www.broadbandreports.com/forum/remark,9235388

you can manually increase max. number of session per host, which apparently has a very low default value for some ZyXEL routers. worth a look anyway.

Thanks for your suggestion.

My router has a "Max NAT/Firewall Session Per User" setting, but the max is 6000, which, apparently, is too low.

I just wonder why there's no problem with uTorrent.

is "Max NAT/Firewall Session Per User" the same as "max. number of session per host" ?

probably worth poking around in your routers control panel and see what settings can be adjusted.

i don't know about uTorrent .. never ran it.

Hi.

I'm experiencing the same thing.
The Zyxel routers have the NAT sessions per host thingy, mine is also set to 6000.

As far as I have been able to deduce, the problem is not as straight forward.
1) The Transmission settings only allow you to specify number of peers, it doesn't set how many simultaneous TCP sessions each peer get.
- Does peers get any more than one TCP session?
2) The Zyxel router has proven to be an extremely unstable router. I.e. my bet is, that it simply doesn't clean up the "hanging" sessions correctly.
I've found, that a power-cycle (hard, not soft) often helps the router to get out of the "too many" problem, where as closing the client PC or soft-resetting the router doesn't help.

EDIT: Also, it seems that the "number of sessions per host" is really a "number of sessions in total". Sigh.... Zyxel sucks

I never found a solution, so I ended up switching to uTorrent; it works.

I'm back with Transmission again – and still have this problem, though not all the time. One thing I've noticed is that the router log keeps filling up with the "max. number of session per host!" message even after Transmission has been shut down.

I have this issue too with a Draytek Vigor 130.
