outbound traffic restriction on firewall

Post by heluani »

The default policy of my firewall is set to DROP all outbound packets. This has worked fine with every service on my server except for transmission. Transmission uses random ports assigned by the OS and initiates new TCP connections out of them, so that a rule that would allow outbound traffic on an existing or related connection does not work. Is there any effective way of having this drop policy and allowing transmission to work, other than just opening all high ports (effectively invalidating the policy)?

PS. unrelated I have just registered to this forum and it took me a while cause the e-mail server from sendgrind is blocked by bl.spamcop.net, I presume several users here might be hit by this.
