feature to block peers who block dl

Post by bkp »

I look at the peers tab under a torrent's properties and I see a peer who is downloading from me, but has the status, "d: We would download from this peer if they would let us" I want to be able to right click on that peer and block him/her.

Those who only want to leech should be punished!

maybe it isn't leeching? you can't seed to all peers...

In this case (for this particular torrent) it's obvious that the peer is a leecher. It's not a highly popular dl. (Only a handful of dl'ers and only a couple of seeders.)

Try the following from the Mac OS X Terminal:

sudo ipfw add deny ip from x.x.x.x to any

Where x.x.x.x is the leachers IP address.

Cheers, Ed.

nice that works... but I get this error:
"Requested download is not authorized for use with this tracker."

I could be wrong, but I don't believe that there is anything in the bittorent protocol that requires a peer to upload to the same peer it is downloading from IE those peers not uploading to you could currently have all of their upload slots full uploading to other peers in the cloud for all you know.

One simple way to handle this is to reduce the number of clients for that torrent.

Suppose you are downloading a big/slow torrent that will take some hours/days to download, and after a while you find that you download from 5 clients but are connected to a lot more. And also upload a lot.

Then reduce the number of clients to a lower number. I am a friendly guy, so I normally reduce to 1.5 or 2 x the number of clients i download from. In the case above I would reduce the number of clients to 10. That way you make sure you benefit if more clients start uploading after a while.

Check now and then to see if you should increase/reduce the number of clients as more arrive/leave.

It would be nice if the number of clients could be automatically adjusted using similar rules.

bumping this thread. would be nice if the gtk version (for linux) has the 'block peer' option of transmission for mac. really need to block a particular leecher.

Why not just add the IP to the blocklist?
