Bonjour Peers?

Post by jphastings »

I'm designing a bittorrent assist application - a small app that runs as if it were a standard peer on the same machine and provides pieces from alternative sources. Is there some way (preferably a cross-torrent app method, but especially for transmission) of a peer announcing itself and that it effectively could provide pieces for *any* torrent?

I could just point my app to the folder transmission keeps its torrent files in and tell it to announce itself on all of those, but that's misleading to other peers. Is DHT designed to work in this fashion? I've been reading the Azureus DHT wiki page http://azureuswiki.com/index.php/DHT but it seems like this is not the way forward.

I suppose what I'd like to hear is that transmission looks for other bittorrent clients on the local network via bonjour and queries them to see if they have pieces of the torrents its downloading.

The alternative to all of this is for me to write yet another bittorrent client that incorporates my assistive tech, but there are already many good ones out there!

Does anyone have any ideas?

Looks like someone has had this idea before: http://www.ether.net.au/~robin/bittorre ... nf_ext.rtf
I wonder if anyone uses it?
