"Prefetch failed" spam when saving to a Samba share

Postby tsigo » Wed Apr 13, 2011 1:45 am

For every torrent I download, I set its destination to my fileserver, which my Mac is connected to via Samba. When I view Transmission's Debug log, I see a constant stream of "Prefetch failed" messages; literally hundreds every second, for each active torrent.

Is that anything to be concerned about? Does it have any impact on performance? I imagine it's got to.

Anybody? I'm getting long, frequent lockups of Transmission when I'm downloading to the Samba share at anything over 3 megabytes a second, and I'm thinking this might be at least part of the problem. Finder has no problem writing to the share at those speeds and higher.

In inout.c, you could comment out:

Code: Select all

if( rc < 0 ) {
                /* (don't set "err" here... it's okay for prefetch to fail) */
                tr_tordbg( tor, "prefetch failed for \"%s\": %s",
                           file->name, tr_strer

I would be very surprised if that's causing the log... but IMO that's a useless error message anyway. I'll remove it for 2.32 if you'll open a ticket so that I don't forget about it :)

May I ask where else in the code that error message is generated?
