Transmission opens all torrent files upon opening

Every torrent file I've ever downloaded appears to open in a near alphabetical order when I launch transmision. It's several thousand files. When I add these downloads, instead of saying the transfer already exists which it ought to as I don't delete the files, the download begins. All these open files makes transmission crash often. I love transmission and would love an end to this problem. Thank you.
