Hey, I thought I'd add a little remedy I found.

I had the same problem as everyone else, when I started transmission my internet would drop, and I'd have to restart in order to reconnect. I did the workaround posted in this thread, did everything else with the router, port forwarding, dns, dchp, etc. And I was still getting hte same problem. Then I read somewhere about another fix that may work.

Go to system preferences ---> network, highlight airport (or whatever you have named it), and hit the minus sign, which will remove it from the list. Then hit the plus sign and choose airport from the drop down list, and name it whatever you want (i just did the airport 2).

I've noticed significant improvements in terms of connect-ability. When speed limits are turned off the issue seems to be gone completely. When speed limits are on, I will occasionally experience torrent connection dropping, but then when turning off and on the airport it connects again (which is much easier than restarting the system).

Hi,

This change appears to be germane to the problem:

http://trac.transmissionbt.com/changese ... d_path=%2F

Before r7170, the socket receive/send buffers were bounded. After r7170, the socket buffers may be much larger. Large buffers w/ large number of connections is causing the mbuf exhaustion that users are reporting.

Limiting the socket buffers by lowering the system default may work, but it's not really an acceptable solution.

Any reason we can't just revert r7170?

I would also like to add that this is happening to me. Previous builds of Transmission either did not appear to do this, or I may be remembering things differently. With the wife now at home with our little one, I am not there to cancel out of programs and she is not comfortable with shutting down my apps in order to browse the web (or maybe she feels she shouldn't have to-if you have a wife, you'll understand). Regardless, the fact that I could multitask gracefully, and mostly painlessly was one of the reasons I was sold on the Mac platform. I've got about five or six transfers going and the Mac slows down to a screeching halt, making the initial loading of Safari take forever, not to mention once it actually loads waiting for the pages to come up. Transmission version is 1.74. Could the number of peers affect this? I've noticed that it hasn't happened with all downloads, but high traffic ones appear to be troubling.

I just wanted to add my experiences here. Prior to upgrading to snow leopard I had no transmission related crashes.

* Upgraded to snow leopard on my 2 x 2.8 ghz quad-core xeon
** Transmission 1.71 started crashing all network apps followed by the entire system, usually within 10-15 minutes of starting a couple transfers.
** Transmission 1.74, 1.75, 1.76, 1.61 all have the same behavior (other versions untested)
** If I catch the "crash" within a couple minutes of it happening and force-quit transmission my system recovers, if not the whole system eventually requires a hard reset.

* uTorrent 0.9.2 works just fine, I matched the same settings in uTorrent with what I had in transmission as much as possible
** Matched Settings: 500 global connection limit; 100 per torrent. PEx and DHT enabled.
** Unmatched settings: uTorrent doesn't support the IP blocklist.

I really really love Transmission (I donated $5 a few days ago, I know it's not much, but I wanted to say thank you) and really miss all the nice features in Transmission that is lacking from uTorrent. If there's any testing I can do to help track down this bug I'd be happy to help.

Well, 1.34 has been running for about 4 hours for me now without any sign of bringing down my network or my system. *knock on wood*

I miss a couple of the features from the 1.7x line, but 1.34 is still suits me better than uTorrent. What's frustrating is that 1.71 worked perfectly on Leopard without any problems.

Here's to hoping for a future version of Transmission that restores snow leopard compatibility!

...my experiences:
-it doesn't happen on tiger...mac mini ppc, 10.4.11 via ethernet (no ap) t 0.82 running wihout any problems since 2007
-the other machine is mbp 2.4 early 2008 when I bought it instantly ditched 10.5.2 and upped it to 10.5.5 and put t 1.34 on...the whole machine runs without problems...thought I dont use this one as much as the older ppc mini but I think it's quite funny that this thing didn't show itself for more than a year (only mod in the software setup since sep 2008 was adding bluephoneelite2 last month...hardly matters)...t mostly ran with the up capped to 14k (so I can max out the down part to 260k...yup its a slow one) down uncapped, peers is on default 200/60...turtle limit is 3/3 and in frequent use...after more than a year, yesterday kicked in 3 times with the symptons exactly matching the ones others described...so I made the recomended sysctl.conf as a plain txt utf8 file with textedit and placed it into the /etc folder and rebooted...the system is now running as if nothing bad happened

I've also had this happening, the current beta builds don't seem to fix it either.

Tried the fix through terminal that was posted earlier on this thread but it doesn't seem to help.

The only way I've been able to get Transmission to work has been to limit the upload speeds pretty significantly. I'm getting good download speeds and all, but I'd like to be able to seed more than I am. Previous builds have the same issues.

This problem only recently showed up for me, but I think that's mostly due to the fact that I didn't have very many large files until recently.

Frankly, if this isn't fixed in the 1.80 release, I'm jumping ship.

I really like transmission but 1.82 still has this problem .... reverted to 1.34 and it works well downloading. Seems seeding is an issue with 1.34, however, later versions seeded at high speeds. Strange...

Thanks for the effort you are putting into the development. Hope a solution will reveal itself --- you deserve a break on this issue!

Kind regards,

The slow death bug doesn't effect me anymore. I don't know why. I manage an 'ungodly' amount of seeds with TM so at one point this was a very big problem especially overnight. Since I last posted about the issue I:
  • switched to Chromium, which uses a lot less memory then Firefox and seems to be faster and more stable. My "slow death" may have been falsely attributed to TM or might have resulted in the combination of TM or FF
  • started using using iFreeMem which increased the amount of reported "Free" memory. I now usually run with hundreds/thousands MBs of "Free" memory as opposed to <30MB with 2GB+ "Inactive" (and yes I am aware how OS X memory management works)
  • updated to 1.82

...almost a month passed since I applied the "fix" (and wrote here)...and I'm happy to report that it does solve the issue!...no slow deaths for me :D

Re: Transmission causes leopard slow death (Snow Leopard too?)

Post by LicknCrunch »

Does anyone know if this same OS bug is in Snow Leopard? I ask because before upgrading to Snow Leopard I was having similar troubles, but after upgrading the trouble has only gotten worse. Here's my hardware configuration:

OS Version: 10.6.2
Model Name: iMac
Model Identifier: iMac8,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 6 MB
Memory: 4 GB
Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
Boot ROM Version: IM81.00C1.B00
SMC Version (system): 1.29f1

Transmission version: 1.83+ (10097)
Peer listening port is open
No speed limits set

Exact symptoms:
Once Transmission is started I have an unknown amount of time before it ceases all downloads and seeds and prevents me from pausing anything before force quitting the application. That unknown amount of time varies from only a couple of minutes to a couple of hours and once it stops I cannot use Transmission without force quitting and relaunching the application. When it freezes I may be connected to anywhere from 0 to 60 peers with download/upload speeds of 0 to 2.5 MB/s per torrent. The give away that it has frozen is that the numbers quit changing and the pinwheel appears. Trying to wait it out doesn't change anything, as I've tested a few times overnight.

I can continue using any other application and access the Internet without problem, even after Transmission freezes. Once I force quit Transmission I can relaunch Transmission without problem until it freezes again. This is the only application I'm having trouble with like this, but that doesn't mean it's the application's fault if Snow Leopard has the same bug Leopard did.

Transmission version: 1.83+ (10097)
Peer listening port is open
No speed limits set

Crash reports:
No crash reports to offer. It doesn't crash, it just freezes until I force quit the application.

I have applied the "fix" to see if that helps, but this is the second attempt to use it in the past 3 days without success, so I thought it is also time to ask the question - does anyone know if this same OS bug is in Snow Leopard? If not, does anyone know what this could be? If so, do you know how to fix it?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks for your response x190. Unfortunately, I'm still having the same problem.

I disabled DHT before making any other changes. Since then I've tested a variety of settings ranging from only allowing 2 active transfers with 10 peers and 100 kb/s speeds, to allowing 5 active transfers up to 200 peers, maximum download speeds of 3000 kb/s and upload speeds of 500 kb/s. It froze every time.

So, I started looking for another cause of the problem and I think I've narrowed it down to a couple of possibilities... tell me if you think either of these sound plausible:

1. I use Intego VirusBarrier X6 for firewall security and virus protection. I have it set at a fairly high security level, but modified the settings to allow P2P. Turning the protection completely off doesn't help nor hinder Transmission's performance, however I'm not convinced that X6 isn't at least a partial culprit for the constant freezing of Transmission.

2. Transmission seems to freeze rather quickly once I launch a web browser. If I do not launch a web browser Transmission averages an additional 15-20 minutes of up time before freezing. So, I'm convinced that launching a web browser and specifically surfing the Internet may trigger a bug of some kind causing Transmission to freeze.

Any ideas?

I've started experiencing this recently on Snow Leopard, however it shouldn't be caused by disk-activity, only thing I know of that can cause issues like this is a program that is spawning way too many connections (which is an issue that Apple has never bothered to do anything about, despite prompting).

I experience basically the same thing; web-pages stop loading, Transmission (which I usually have hidden) can't be brought to the front, Finder becomes unresponsive causing force-quit to cease functioning. iTunes will usually continue playing with issue, but its UI becomes frozen as well.

It's not even possible to get a useful crash-report out of it, as I eventually have to force shut-down.

[edit] I tried the "fix" posted earlier, but that doesn't help, just delays the inevitable. I've gone back to v1.82 as I've only started noticing this issue recently, hopefully I can isolate a version that introduces the error, but having to force shut-down is not desirable, I may have to jump several versions back just to keep my computer running so I can get work done.

Hi, I registered so I could report the same problem. Once I start Transmission, it works fine for awhile until eventually all network activity ceases (I see this from Activity Monitor and Network Monitor in Little Snitch) . Transmission freezes along with all my other open apps as well. Finder hangs. And eventually the whole system locks up until I have to force a restart. This has happened 5 times in the past few days.

I think I am going to take x190's suggestion and go back to 1.34 and see if that fixes anything. I'll let you know.
