I've got a concept screenshot for you.
There is a green button in the toolbar. But it's not a button - it's a indicator of the Port status (like one in the Transmission preferences menu). I think it is a good idea to put it right to the Toolbar. The same stuff already in Papaya (status bar).
It will show you the Port status - if it's online or offline:
Red icon - Port is closed, Green icon - Port is opened, Yellow icon - Port status unknown …

Re: Port status indicator in Toolbar
Similar to uTorrent and Azureus, I guess...
I think it's utility is rather limited by port forwarding itself - once you have a stable setup, it's just a green light on the UI that's taking up space/polluting it (or red light, if you're not able to forward it)... But being a toolbar setting which you can add or remove as needed, I guess it'd be ok, as long as it's not default setting =)

Re: Port status indicator in Toolbar
since i'm using transmission not that often and in quite some different places, i always check if port is open just after launch. i'd really apreciate this function, but i'd definitely vote for the lower right of the main window to put the dot. And yes, just as an option.
