Error 36 message recently, after downloading torrents

I consulted the troubleshooting files but did not see anything that applies to my problem.

I've been using Transmission for the past ten months or so and always upgrade,
Mac Mini, OSX 10.6.8

I have routinely used Transmission to download files and then transfer the download to a LeCie external HD.

During the past two weeks however, no matter what file I download, when i try to transfer to the HD,
i get this message:

The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “(title).S03E03.HDTV.XviD-LOL.[VTV].avi” can’t be read or written.
(Error code -36)

Because this problem is recent (a departure from standard practice), and constant, I am not sure what is going wrong.
Can anyone shed some light on why this is, and what can I do?

I feel somewhat relieved that others, apparently many others, have encountered a similar problem ---
and some have managed to resolve it.
