I am having the same problem as everyone else. Using a Belkin Wireless G Plus Router (v1212df). Transmission 1.0 and 1.01 swamp the router so that all other internet traffic slows to a crawl and regularly cannot connect at all. Router will at intervals cut out for a few seconds stopping even Transmission momentarily. Other macs connected to the router on the LAN are also slowed to a crawl and suffer from disconnections on all traffic types. Turning off Transmission instantly fixes all problems.

Downloads from Transmission are good at good speed, I do get the "Error: Tracking could not be reached" about 20-25% of the time.

I have set Transmission to a max. of 300 connections, 40 per download. I haven't noticed much difference no matter what settings I use.

Using 10.4.11 on iMac G5 1.9GHz.

PS I also get the beachball sometimes, but it's rare, I think just due to the computer being genuinly busy, Transmission 1.01 hasn't crashed on me

PS2 the router is wireless, but I am connected with UTP cable, so no airport issues involved

I just downloaded the latest nightly (posted just about an hour ago), and it no longer seems to be completely raping my internet connection. At least, I can still browse web pages now while torrents are downloading.

I just downloaded the latest nightly as well r4725, and the problem has completely stopped! I am, however, consistently getting the message Error: Tracker could not be reached on all torrents, whereas before I downloaded the nightly I only got the message on a few and it would go away. These messages aren't going away. It's not a big deal because it's not affecting my downloads or uploads in any way, I just can't see info on others. I'm sure this will get resolved soon too.

Thanks to everyone who helps in making the greatest torrent client I've ever used!!

I also downloaded the nightly recommended above and the problem seems to have been fixed. Thanks!

hammarst: That nightly is old. Try a recent one and see if that still occurs. (and reply one way or another)

Re: Transmission kills my internet connection

Post by mangosteen »

Hi guys, first time poster to this forum, but I've been reading this thread for a while because I've been suffering from the same strange internet slowdown. It seems Transmission has gone from something that I found very stable and useful several versions back to something that renders my network connection completely unusable now. I've tried downloading the nightly build mentioned above (1.01+ (4723)), and while at first it seemed promising, a few days' worth of playing with it seems to imply that it's still not behaving the way I'd expect. Even when all torrents are paused, simple exercises like running speedtest.net's download tests are unusable. My girlfriend and I share bandwidth on my router, and she complains of unusable internet speeds when I have transmission running as well. Quitting transmission entirely almost immediately restores normality to our connection.

I'm running Leopard, and while I suppose I could cite what my prefs are set to in Transmission, adjusting most of them seems to make no difference (so I couldn't point to a single preference that seems to make a difference). Limiting connections to very small numbers (50 or less) doesn't make much of a difference either. We're using a Netgear ADSL Wireless Firewall Router DG834G.

Hello!
Just installed the newest nightly (r4734).
And first impression is that it actually seems to be working now :D .
I'll report back in a couple of hours after some more extensive testing.

Hello again;

Just switched over to r4734 again as per previous comment, and am still experiencing the same problems. If it's at all helpful, here are some clues:

with Transmission open and active, I see maximum download speeds occasionally hit 30.0KB/s, while normally hovering around 5.0KB/s and often hanging around the 1KB/s area. This is on a well-seeded torrent, though I know these numbers aren't that telling in and of themselves.

With transmission open and active, I can go to visit speedtest.net and chose the server closest to me. Reported max download speed is 58kb/s...severely lower than what I pay for every month.

Pausing transmission, but leaving it open, results in the same download speeds from speedtest.

Closing transmission completely and waiting a few minutes (without changing any other operating conditions) results in a speedtest result of 3566kb/s. This is what my ISP plan indicates I should be expecting.

Ok... My system seems to be working perfectly now.
Just want to add a few remarks in response to the post above.
I newer had any problems with the downloadsped of transmission. It has been downloading with a speed of approx. 1MB/s all along.

See you and thanks for all help!

latest nightly, slight improvement.

Post by our.man.flint »

I'm having the same problems detailed recently all over this forum.
Powerbook Ti550, tiger 10.4.11. Transmission has been very poor since xmas..will kill my web connection for any machine trying to use surf. D/l speeds initially can hit 30-50 but quickly drop, pausing and restarting can help a little but the behaviour is essentially the same. The more torrents I have on the worse it is and the quicker it comes into effect. I have a combination of wired and airport machines here on my home network, all are affected.
Running the nightly r4738 is an improvement, running 1 torrent is reliable, 2 seems to work although not with great speeds, more than that and it's back to the post xmas 0.0/0.0?

I just got the r4740 and it seems that the problem persists. Could it be something relative to the bittorrent net? It is strange that the program beggins to fail from one day to other. There were no problems with it a few days ago. At the moment the program is totally unusable.
Thanks in advance for your support and help.

I've disabled VirusBarrier in my computer and everything seems fine now. I've been working with transmission during 30 minutes and no problems with internet connections . I hope it helps.
Thanks.
