mac help for beginner

Post by dporn »

ive only recently had the possession of a Mac OS X computer, i am new to computers in general and am not very good with torrent systems and how they work. I have downloaded transmission and have downloaded the torrents which i would like to upload now but there is one small problem. When i try to add the torrent to transmission a window pops up telling me to locate a tracker. What is a tracker and how will i go about opening this torrent file in transmission once i have one?

You add the .torrent files to transmission. The window you describe is the creator window, which means you're trying to add something other than the .torrent file.

ahh, still not getting any results. Ive tried many different torrent files from many sources and its all the same. It says that There is no tracker address when i click create, and The torrent file will not be able to be opened. A torrent file with no tracker address is only useful when you plan to upload the file to a tracker website that will add the address for you. pleeease help

are you trying to create a torrent, or are you trying to download something?

if you want to download something, read the 'getting started' section in the help.

in a nutshell: a tracker website will list items to download. clicking an item will download a .torrent file to your desktop. dragging this file into transmission will start the download.

if you drag a file or folder into transmission, T will attempt to create a .torrent file, in which case you need to enter tracker into etc. this is what you seem to be doing.

The same problem has been happening to me. I will download a torrent file and when I drag it into transmission the "create a torrent" window pops up, NOT the add torrent window.

When I go to file and choose the "open torrent file" and select the file, I get a message that says " 'blahblahblah.torrent' is not a valid torrent file. The torrent file cannot be opened because it contains invalid data"

The file I am trying to drag in is definitely a torrent file. I have tried it over and over again. I have downloaded three different versions of transmission and this is still happening.

PLEASE HELP! (fyi, I know very little, so if you know how to fix my problem give my VERY basic step by step explanation)

Going on the information you provided, it sounds like the torrent file is invalid. ;)

What's in the message log when set to debug?

I have downloaded dozens of different files from different sites and get the same messages.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know all of this. I have downloaded quite a few successfully. But then, all of a sudden every time I try to open the bittorent in transmission I get the same message that it is not a valid file. If I try to drag and drop the file into transmission it acts like I am creating a torrent file, not adding one. (See first post for more detail)

Same thing has been happening to me - and this is getting very annoying - it does exactly the same as you are describing - if you drag it you get the "create a torrent" message. I only recently made the big jump from like vrsion 0.82 - which had no problems at all - but since downloading v1.42 I have had this problem.

Have you tried double-clicking on the .torrent file?

If the add window doesn't open, do a "get info" on the .torrent file and make sure Transmission is selected as the "open with" application.

No matter how I do it - double-clicking, right click and "open with" or open from Transmission's file menu - the response is the same. I read on another board that it may be that the torrent was created by a program which does not translate over to Transmission - I think it was uTorrent - the idea was that if you create a faulty torrent using that programme, uTorrent can still read it - but other Torrent clients can't. If this is true then those torrents are not salvageable by me.

Hey guys, i recently experienced this problem, it seems it was only a case of waiting for the torrent file to be completely downloaded before bringing it into transmission...hopefully this works, as it worked for me!

PS i was torrenting an HD tv season approx 20 GB, so it took a while to download the torrent file.

I had the same problem. All of a sudden my torrent files kept saying "*.torrent" is not a valid torrent file. I then realized this might be because I switch to Google Chrome. I switched to Safari and the torrent downloaded fine and Transmission accepted it. For some reason, torrent files downloaded with Google Chrome don't work. Weird.
