German Localisation

So what about a German localisation?

There seemed to be efforts along those lines last year which appear to have stopped.

Is there any interest in having one?

Also on the subject of translations, I've nearly finished a brazilian portuguese one, based on OS X's own translation (when possible - when not, tried to do something not so literal/"word by word"). I guess that, as someone pointed me out, worse case scenario, only I'll use it =)

I did try to ask around on IRC, but apparently I joined the channel at the wrong time =P...

As I said, I can work on a German localisation, but I would need some advice on this first (which files to work on, at which point it would make sense to start etc).

Yep, an official german translation would be cool.

I would help to translate the Mac Version of Transmission into German too, but only if the Dev Team would like to have one.

(I don't have any experience with translating transmission, but http://trac.transmissionbt.com/wiki/Translating should help us with that.)

I suggest you to read the Wiki page mentioned above, then download and install Xcode so you can play around and learn how to use it to translate according to the wiki.
Joinning the IRC channel can also help with questions and other things - not to mention I think it's also a nice way to contact the developper responsible (try livings or Bentmywookie on the #transmission Freenode channel - both are nicknames Michael Livingston uses, I believe). =)

Let's perhaps be a bit slower here.

Localisations are not trivial to get right. And rushing them through will give bad results, particularly for a non-trivial project like Transmission. I am happy do do some localisation, but I am not willing to clean up after other people's mistakes.

What I can offer is experience with the developer tools as well as with standard Mac terminology. While I am familiar with Transmission itself, I am far from being a BitTorrent expert, and would probably need assistance or explanations to get some of the more obscure strings right. (I am also not familar with IRC, so I couldn't try that mode of communication yet.)

Before starting it would also be good to agree on a 'philosophy' for the localisation as this can shape the result significantly. This decision may well be one the project maintainers want to be involved in even if they will not use the localisation themselves. Important questions in that area would be whether Transmission is aimed more at average users for whom non-technical terminology should be used or whether it's aimed at people who prefer sticking closer to the somewhat P2P software-specific English terminology using words like 'peer' without further localisation.

Finally, it's probably a good idea to know whether any significant UI changes are due in the near future and wait until they are checked in before working on the xib files as German localisations usually require extra space for strings and will thus probably require fiddly repositioning of UI elements.

Ok... I see.... If you think you are more qualified to do the translations, I offer my help ... As I said, I already started to translate the Localizable.strings file (25% of the file is translated).... If you like to have it and check it, I could sent it to you ....

I do not have much experience with xcode because I bought my mac 1 month ago, but I tried a bit and I think that get into xcode shouldn't be a problem.

I would like to help you, it would be a great chance to get into mac development a bit.

Anything new on this topic?

I myself have no problem using Transmission in english, because i read english that often, that i don't mind reading it once more. It's just that all my other apps are german - so it would be nice to see Transmission in german too.

If any help is needed, i'll join the translation group - though i've just peeked at translations for mac, but i'm offering my help. Anybody interested in using an IRC for that? transmission-de or something like that?
