Data successfully verifies despite additional content

Post by RandomUser »

Transmission 1.52 (8222) on Mac OS X 10.4.11/Tiger, PPC/G4. Transmission created a torrent file which reflected only a portion of the length of one text file in the data. Peers mentioned that the file was cut off. I checked my copy and it was complete. I selected "Verify Local Data" from the Transfers menu in Transmission. It verified successfully. Peers insisted the file was incomplete. I moved my copy of the data and allowed Transmission to download from the swarm. The downloaded copy was indeed incomplete and it also verified successfully. It appears that Transmission initially created a checksum for only part of the text file content (I have not been able to reproduce this, thankfully.) On a whim, I opened the newly downloaded text file and typed a few dozen extra characters at the end and saved it, then verified it again... successfully. So, the issue I am reporting is that Transmission will verify a file even if the file is longer / contains additional data. This does not seem at all desirable... security issues with executables comes to mind, for instance.

I think the initially created torrent file only contains the initially included files/content. You cannot create a torrent and add content later as far as I know. It is only verifying the content that was included in the original torrent file. Perhaps I misunderstand what you are saying though.
