Fewer encrypted peers?

Post by TheBang »

Has anyone noticed much much fewer encrypted peers with more recent versions (maybe going back to 1.50 or so)?

I remember previously having tons of encrypted peer connections to uTorrent, Transmission, and Azureus peers. These days, I have very few or no encrypted peer connections. Anyone else having few or no encrypted peers? Have we regressed to the encryption bug that was fixed several months back?

I'm having fewer peers -- period. I'm still trying to figure out what is happening, but it seems to me that Transmission now has a EASIER time picking up ENCRYPTED peers.

At this moment, of the downloading torrents I have, I have the following connections to peers:

0 of 9
3 of 19 (all encrypted)
4 of 20 (3 encrypted) (1 unencrypted "Vuse")
0 of 8

As for seeding torrents I'm connecting to:

0 of 5 leeching
1 of 12 leeching (1 encrypted)
1 of 7 leeching (1 encrypted)
1 of 13 leeching (1 encrypted)
3 of 10 leeching (all encrypted)
1 of 9 leeching (1 encrypted)
0 of 6 leeching

This is a preliminary observation, but it seems that if I start Transmission (1.54 and 1.52 act the same) with the "Prefer Encrypted Peers" option ON and "Ignore unencrypted peers" option OFF, Transmission will pick up encrypted peers relatively quickly and will - after a while - pick up ONLY "Vuse" unencrypted peers. If I restart Transmission with both of the encryption options OFF, it will pick up a few other unencrypted peers (other than "Vuse") and - it seems - the encrypted peers, but still not even 50% of available peers. (These are obviously small swarms.)

Until recently I was able to connect -- after a period of time -- to most of the available peers, so I find this quite odd. I believe I was running w/o either of the encryption options before I started noticing the lack of connections to peers.

Too bad Transmission doesn't show encrypted/unencrypted status in the Peers window of Torrent Inspector when running with the encryption options OFF. I only knew which ones were encrypted because I was taking notes - while running with the Prefer Encrypted Peers ON - regarding which peers were running encrypted.

Is it possible that my preferences regarding encryption are corrupted? If so, can I delete the preference file without screwing up currently running downloads and seeding activity?

Maybe I'll try some earlier versions of Transmission....

No, it's not just you. Transmission is pretty FUBAR, and until it gets fixed I won't be using it. Which is a shame because it probably has the best interface/options of any OS X torrent application.
