How to install 1.6 over 1.71 and keep Torrent lists - ULs &

Post by tolen »

Versions 1.70 and 1.71 have been causing me fits! Versions 1.61 and prior have worked flawlessly. I wish to revert to version 1.60 till the kinks are worked out of 1.7x.

I read the recent “slow death” thread. Another thread lead me to:
http://download.m0k.org/transmission/files/

from which was downloaded TM v.1.60:
transmission-1.60.tar.bz2

Reading “How to downgrade back to 1.34?” at this forum seems to imply that simply dragging a different version to where it’s located within the Applications folder is the BEST method for downgrading TM.

Will this maintain TM’s current upload and download status, so that they will be essentially uninterrupted? There are currently two critical tutorials in downloading, and five seeding, which range from 1.5 GB to 3 GB.
Where is the seeding info stored — what particular file?
Is it possible to back-up said file by either compressing it or moving it to another Volume and then putting it back before restarting Transmission?
Would all functions carry on uninterrupted?

I think (but am not sure) that all data is being capt as it is. because you only change the program to an other program and the preferences etc. stay the same (though If I were you I should wait for more people to say this)

thanks for the response, essiw.

Unless the basic mechanism for writing and accessing preferences is substantially different, there shouldn't be a problem. Live updating hasn't fiddled with it's status window, but that doesn't necessarily assure backward compatibility.

If I just knew what files to back-up, I'd breathe a lot easier.

What I'm downloading now are rare tutorials, available nowhere but from through the tracker I'm using. They're about 1.5 -> 2.8 GB each, and I'd hate to have to begin again, as there are 16 of them. Otherwise I'd simply overwrite the 1.71 app file (after backing up)

The admittedly simple information doesn't seem to appear either in HELP or the FAQ.
Hopefully, someone will jump in to confirm that the Transmission window status will remain essentially the same -- that torrent info will be unaltered.

Anyone?

OT:
By the way, as a erstwhile copywriter, I wouldn't mind contributing freely to such a worthwhile effort as Transmission. Absolute technical ignorance, such as mine, can be an unparalleled asset in helping other ignoramuses to glean a basic understanding of the software.

well ofcourse you could backup the files you are downloading (So the incomplete files) and the torrents of them (User -> Library -> Application support -> Transmission -> Torrents). But one thing you can't save are unfinished pieces, so if something would go wrong you would lose a bit of the download

essiw,
Thanks for the warning about the "unfinished pieces."

Unfortunately the posts are composed or 20+ RAR files, none of which are complete, and the torrent activity is waning. So downloading will be confined to off-hours, when this computer is not otherwise being used.
FYI, I went back to another startup volume in this box (sort of a backup now) running OSX 10.5.2, and Transmission 1.52. That runs very smoothly -- not a hitch.

Gsheesh, I guess my question was to simple for enlightened elite -- excepting yourself, kind sir.

I'll get back in about a week, when to DL's done, to tell how the retrograde turned out, for others who are too embarrassed to ask such a rudimentary question.

That statement doesn't really make any sense. Unfinished parts are saved to the disk and stay there, if you stop and start Transmission you don't loose any data. The same apply when you change to a different version of the program.

tolen: What is the specific problem you have with 1.71?
have you tried a nightly build to see if that solves the problem?

@jh I meant you can't backup it.

The partially downloaded parts are saved. The data is saved with the temp file(s) and the information on what parts are: Complete, partially complete or missing is stored with the settings for Transmission.

So it is possible to backup partially downloaded parts of a torrent.
