Transmission 1.72 - Causes my MAC to freeze

hi,

i switched from PC to Mac very recently and all was going well until i started to use Transmission 1.72. I have not used the speed limit, i changed port to 63064 - forgotten why!, DL rate- un-limited, UL rate - limited to 58 KB/s, port-forwarding is switched on.

i'm new to downloading torrents. don't get me wrong - it seems simple, stylish and is obviously a lightweight piece of software but since installing it and starting to download my first (very large) torrent, it has started to make my Mac behave like my PC used to. here's what happens:

- i will open Safari which behaves very slowly. after a while, usually when refreshing or launching tabs, i will get the beachball of death.
- sometimes i can't force quit Safari or other software such as Lightroom 2.4 that has ground to a halt.
- i can NEVER force-quit transmission when this is happening.
- i have to hold the power button and do a cold shutdown to resolve the situation...i hate doing that.
- maybe it's worth me mentioning that the only third-party app which is running in the background most of the time is Quicksilver.

luckily, on resuming transmission the torrent continues to download as though everything is good...but the crashes are happening very frequently. i would try out a nightly build but given this torrent will take at least 7-10 days to complete at the current 'traffic-shaped' rate, i'll have to wait...i have downloaded nearly 10 of 52Gb so am currently a bit committed....that has taken the best part of 3 days!

there's no mention of Transmission in Crash Reporter and no mention of the words 'assertion failurs' re: Transmission in the Log Database Queries (although the word Transmission is mentioned).

i have some further questions:

- is there any chance that the shutdowns and reboots, which mean Transmission is being forced to quit mid-flow and then being relaunched, will end-up with my downloaded files being broken/fractured? i've noticed tonnes of references to 'check sum tests' that have 'failed' in the Transmission Message Log...easily 200 or so...

pps- could i stop the download, install the latest nightly-build, and resume from where i left off with the torrent? how would i go about this?

pps - i use TalkTalk as my ISP - the max i get is 100 KB/s DL rate. it goes over that every now and then but only momentarily. is this due to the traffic shaping or some other reason.

You could also try creating a new user in your computer and seeing if you get the same symptoms (beachball).

And yes, you can update and resume later on.

thanks for replying. those are the instructions i followed - my system/os is i n my signature...perhaps i should have placed it in the body; apologies.

i will try installing the latest nightly build now and if there are any other problems, i will try try logging in as another user (the account i use is admin). also i forgot to mention that Transmission never quits properly when i ask it to even if it and everything else are running fine...it will just say Quitting over the dock icon but it doesn't. that's just happened now. it doesn't freeze other applications though when this happens.

What build of Transmission are you using?

The whole idea of trying a new user is to exclude the possibility of something being in your user (admin or not) that could be causing some sort of conflict, since you mentioned you were having beachball with other applications while having Transmission on.

Transmission quits properly. How long do you wait? Sometimes it can be instant quit, sometimes it takes a couple of seconds, just wait until it closes (it's closing peers and all that stuff).

hi,

my title mentioned i was using 1.72 (is that the right way to describe the build?). sorry again - i should have put it in the main body of my msg.i have been using the nightly 'Transmission-1.73+Z-svn-r8843' since this morning. it is now constantly maxed at 100KB/s DL and 50KB/s UL - a big improvement especially given it is lunch-time.

I noticed last night that Transmisison did quit once i had asked it to (all other apps were closed at this point) - it took over a minute to close. but like i says, i'll see how i get on with this build. will open/close/use other apps during the day (Safari is already running much faster - pretty much like normal) and if there are probs will also login as a standard user.

ps - any thoughts re:

If you go to Transmission, and then to About Transmission, you will notice a number in parenthesis, that's the build. 1.72 is the version. In your case, the build you are using is r8843.

1. There is a chance if it happens very often; that's why the application verifies the data (which can be done manually as well) to re-check the data that was downloaded. When you say shutdowns and reboots, you mean only the application or the whole computer? Keep in mind that, generally speaking, shutdowns and reboots that are too often can even damage your computer's hard disk.

2. That happens from time to time, nothing really to worry about.

I would like to tell that I didn't have this problem in 1.72 but I have it now at 1.73, I don't know how I could provide you with a crash report since the only thing I can do is force quit the computer (Can't force quit any program at that time, doesn't matter if it is T or not. i can right click on the dock but then the dock also stops working) Also maybe you can do something with this. Finder does work most of the times (altough the force start window and other windows won't show up) but spaces don't work.

The nightlies haven't been updated in a couple of days, but could you try the latest and see if the issue persists? The latest is r8843, altho I don't see anything in the notes that could be related to the issue.

it seems that version has some bug with the upload speed, I set it at 1KB/s and my upload speed of my computer is 20-40KB/s (if I put it higher it will get higher If I quit T it will be around 1KB/s)
So far it didn't crash my computer, but since my internet connection is around 40-60KB/s continuing with this version is a pain, so I downgrade to 1.72 till 1.74 comes out.

Seems like 1.72 had this too... confusing... then it will be 1.73 again... with a upload of 1KB/s... It is not that I don't wnat it higher it is because I can't

Have you tried deleting this file from Preferences?

org.m0k.transmission.plist

did it just now, lets hope it works.
