[solved] torrent clients crashing snow leopard?

Post by hippy dave »

edit: turns out my particular problem was nothing to do with snow leopard, or transmission
original message is below anyway.

hi
i'm not blaming this one directly on transmission, but i thought i'd post here in case anyone has had similar experiences or has any suggestions.

i installed snow leopard on my (first gen, core duo) macbook on friday, clean install on a brand new hard disk then copied most of my apps/files/settings over manually from the old leopard hard disk. left it running overnight as usual, woke up in the morning to black screen (not surprising, my display sleeps after 10 minutes) and fans on full blast, and no response to keypresses etc - was forced to do a hard reboot (hold the power button down for 5 seconds to turn off).

i upgraded a few things (growl, little snitch, tried switching from the transmission 1.74 release to a new nightly) but it happened again, so i've been trying to find the culprit by a process of elimination. the actual apps that i tend to leave running are just transmission, adium and firefox, then in the background there's little snitch and growl, steermouse and automatic (rss downloader, has its own thread on this board somewhere). i still get crashes either without firefox running, without adium running, or with little snitch turned off, if transmission is still running. thing is, i also got a crash when i didn't run transmission and ran utorrent instead. (these crashes are occurring after several hours of whichever torrent client running - mostly they've been when i've been away from the machine for a while, and come back to black screen, fans blasting and no response to keypresses as above, but one occasion was while i was using it, and apps froze one by one until the whole machine locked up). running all the other apps but no torrent client seems to give no crash. i've also been watching lots of video files (mostly with vlc but sometimes quicktime x), listening to music (cog), copying files back & forth between external & internal drives, and running a few other odds and sodds but none of them have caused any problems.

i could try some other torrent clients (don't like them much tho :) ), but the fact that it's happened with two different ones already suggests that rather than a specific application problem, there's something about the way that resources are used by a torrent client that's making snow leopard throw a wobbly. i'm trying to think what else i could test that would use the network & disk in a similar way, other types of p2p software i guess. anyway, anyone have any ideas, suggestions, similar experiences?
cheers.

I have been using snow leopard now and not one problem what-so-ever with any of my apps. I suspect the culprit is your dragging applications over. If you have a clone of your leopard disk backed up, i recommend upgrading from the leopard drive itself. At the end of the install if there are any programs or apps that are not incompatible, the installer will tell you and automatically move them to an 'incompatible' folder. 45 mins later after installing...i could not even tell that my macbook pro was upgraded. everything including my desktop was the same.

I am running transmission 1.60 build (8308) and lil snitch. i recently downloaded a torrent that was streaming along at 600k+

thanks, but i don't think it's that. all the relevant apps have been replaced with fresh updated downloads now anyway pretty much.

its an os x bug that is interfering with transmission 1.74. read through the forums and you will see a lot more instances. I never liked the builds after 1.60 so i never updated, and mine is working fine. even with SL.

i've read of other problems with snow leopard on this forum, but i haven't seen anyone else say it crashes their computer completely.

I'm having the exact same issue. My iMac keeps eventually locking up while downloading torrents. I've come to the conclusion that it must be Transmission as well.

for the record, i've just had the same crash with rtorrent as well. i guess i'm just gonna have to wait for 10.6.1 and hope apple have sorted their act out a bit.

thanks for the suggestion. i'd tried the fix suggested in that thread, and it didn't stop the crashes. based on that, and the fact that i also get the same crashes with other torrent clients, i don't think that's the problem i'm having.

and thanks yeah maybe i will bitch to apple :)

FYI, I had an older bittorrent client called Bitrocket installed.... it crashes under Snow Leopard.

I wasn't able to get Transmission working, either.

I suspect the products would need to be recompiled/rebuilt under Snow Leopard.

Transmission is completely crashing my system. It happens if the computer goes to sleep and then tries to wake up. It should have been fixed in 1.76 but I'm still getting system crashes. On a side note when the system does crash my preferences for my login items gets destroyed? I'm pretty sure that is a system bug and not a transmission fault.

I have the same problem. It's unusable in its current state.

Exact same issue here. Snow Leopard latest + Transmission latest as of this date = hard crash, must power off to regain control of the machine.
