All the things uTorrent can do that Transmission can't

Post by APOCALYPTICA »

in a very very particular order

1) LABELS.
hundreds of torrents, multiple private trackers... there must be a way to organize my freaking torrents in your gooey. "but apocalyptica, transmission isn't designed for addicts like you"... yeah, as if labels are useless for non-addicts.
actually, yes, i see no reason why leechers would find them useful. hit and runner should not be the assumed majority.

2) EDITABLE TORRENT DIRECTORY.
ooh I can not tell you how hard i yelled "wtf is this sh*t" when i discovered the inability to edit the main directory of a torrent. for the newbies/luddites, a torrent's file structure is either a single file, or a directory with multiple files. it can't just be a list of files. in uTorrent, you can edit the directory. HELL, YOU CAN EDIT ALL FILE PATHS. i edit most of my directories to my whim, my very meticulous whim. and if some one tells me i can actually do this, but i'm too much of a noob to figure it out, i'll feel like a giant homosexual.

3) small font.
i'm a little less irascible on this one. just a little. but for the same reason (1) is a necessity for me (yes, a necessity) to use this, so is small font. i cannot fathom how i can manage hundreds of torrents with each one taking up a 72xWHATEVER (yeah i took a snapshot and went into GIMP to find the y-dimension, that's how much of a life i have) rectangle of real estate. yeah, i can filter between active/downloading/seeding - BUT THEY ARE ALL ACTIVE-SEEDING (i love my private trackers). labels would be a help, and i might migrate if labels were there. until then, i'm sticking to WINE/uTorrent in my Ubuntu. see my next thread on why I don't go to Azureus (no, it's because not the large memory allocation, tritefags)

ok maybe not all the things. i don't really care about anything else

I think labels will arrive in the rest of the clients eventually. The OSX client has "groups" but it would take a big rewrite to implement globally. The devs would appreciate patches if you want to help.

Can you clarify the feature you'd like to see in 2? I'm not understanding.

Have you tried using the miniature view? You can have Transmission be more brief in the information it shows to save space. I think it cuts almost half of the space used otherwise. The option should be in the view menu.

And finally: calm down.

in the info dictionary of a torrent file of more than one file, the value of the key "4:name" is the name of the directory that will contain all files, with optional relative paths, in the files list (the list after "5:files"). if the torrent only has information about one file, then the name is the single file. as far as I know, that is immutable under transmission. the name has been mutable In utorrent for as long as i can remember. hell, even every individual file path is mutable (or "relocatable"). that's what number 2 means.

random torrent file:

Code: Select all

d
	8:announce
		3:meh
	10:created by
		3:meh
	13:creation date
		i0e
	8:encoding
		5:UTF-8
	4:info
		d
			5:files
				l
					d
						6:length
							i100000000e
						4:path
						l
							12:rzr-prot.001
						e
					e
					d
						6:length
							i100000000e
						4:path
						l
							12:rzr-prot.002
						e
					e
... (the rest of the rar's)
				e
			4:name
				19:Prototype-Razor1911
			... (piece length and pieces)
		e
e
of course the new lines and indentation aren't apart of the actual file

i never use the sticking-out-tongue smiley because it is extremely gay. no one sticks out their tongue to indicate anything anywhere in the world, except disgust in certain parts of africa.

I dont know about number two, but yea.i've been jealous of the Mac client for having Labels (grouping).

Also, the UI display is kinda weird, that I cant change it more like utorrent, deluge, qbittorent or alot of the other clients that have the smaller rows, but I've gotten used to it and minimalist works decently enough. Though, otherwise I agree good suggestions. If I knew how to program. I'd try to edit it myself, but I dont. Unless we''re gonna rewrite this in VB lol. So I'll stick to reporting problems and donating.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it is my understanding the Transmission is a standard GTK+ application, and can be skinned just like any GTK+ application.

I think that if somebody makes a "small font" skin for Transmission, he'll be doing us all a big favour. (But please don't bully Jordan into doing that, I'd much rather he continued hacking at Transmission's core -- he's the only person really competent to do that.)

What we really need is somebody who's interested in UIs giving some love to the GTK+ interface. Livings, do you have a brother?
