As can be seen from the above thread, downloading Transmission 1.34 has solved all the problems I was having which are the same as the OP's

Re: Transmission slows down everything on network
Since version I-don't-know-what (a while ago), I had that network problem on Snow Leopard. When Transmission was running, it would (randomly?) makes my network go crazy, and I would lose all Internet connections for ~1min. At every update or beta release, I tried it, and the problem was still there. My solution was to use a 1.6 release.
But tonight, the things changed. Or they seem to have changed! 1.80b2 has been running for a while now, downloading at a good speed and no crazy network episode yet! Let's hope it stays that way.
So, to the people who had those network issues, give 1.80b2 a try!

I have the problem with both software, no routeur.Kiskaloo wrote:I see the same with both Transmission and uTorrent, though uTorrent seems to handle it better (less often). Might try Vuze and see what that does.
Someone on another thread noted it might be a defense by the router to what it considers an "IP flooding" attack? I am using a Linksys WGC200 gateway.

Re: Transmission slows down everything on network
just cap your upload speed to 75% of your upload speed, if your upload speed gets higher than your provider gives you (yes that is possible) it will slow your download speed to the minum (most likely somewhere between 2-30Kb/s )

I've got the same problem as others above, I've restricted upload speed numerous times trying everything from full to 10%, upload speed doesn't seem to affect this problem.just cap your upload speed to 75% of your upload speed, if your upload speed gets higher than your provider gives you (yes that is possible) it will slow your download speed to the minum (most likely somewhere between 2-30Kb/s )

Re: Transmission slows down everything on network
I downloaded and installed 1.80b3, just over an hour later had an episode where my network and internet connection became completely unresponsive. I shut down Transmission, it took Transmission almost a minute to quit. Right after that, I regained network and internet connectivity. I love Transmission, but I think it's time to look for a new client.
Re: Transmission slows down everything on network
Same here. Caping at 50% of the upload speed, and after a while, the router become completely unresponsive. Quitting Transmission or restarting the router solves temporarily the problem.
I observed this with an 11g airport extreme, 2 router from AVM (3170 and 7113) and 3 different ISP. After a while the network is down, almost nothing is happening anymore on an IP level. The wifi is still here, but for example it is not possible anymore to connect any new computer because it won't receive an IP via DHCP. It is a problem between transmission and the router for sure, because it happened with 3 different ISPs and I can also see that the local network is totally unresponsive.
Browsing on any connected computer is extremely slow or totally impossible. Pinging the router is impossible. It really seems like layer 3 is almost totally dead. I love Transmission, I have some knowledge in networking, so if I can be any help to the Transmission team for logs, troubleshooting etc, including wireshark traces, just tell me.
As a response to some remarks here, I would say that maybe Transmission bears some responsibility in the problem, but the router manufacturers should actually be at shame that a simple bittorrent client is able without any flooding to kill their routers. I mean, come on, flooding a network is going to kill any home network, that's normal, but capped traffic (and aside from some bursts, Transmission is respecting the bandwidth cap as far as I could see – I use iStat Menus) shouldn't be able to slow a router down to unresponsiveness. Most of all, when the network is down, after many hours with Transmission running, Transmission is almost not sending anything anymore either, because the router isn't responding, and still, it is able to maintain the router in that state, with so few packets. After quitting Transmission and waiting a couple of minutes, the router is back, though sometime even that doesn't help and the router has to be rebooted.
I'm trying right know to play with the number of peers (reduced to max 50 globally right now), we'll see.

Re: Transmission slows down everything on network
Hi!
I'm having the same problem on macbook (10.5.8) and imac (10.6.2) with transmission 1.80b3. I like transmission a lot but this way the app is unusable.

Re: Transmission slows down everything on network
reducing "global maximum connections" to 50 peers seems to help a lot for me. I'll have to test it on different routers during a longer time to be sure, but for now, after 2 days running, the local network is still up.
The problem is that reducing the global maximum of peers may also reduce my download speed I guess.

Re: Transmission slows down everything on network
Hi again!
I discover right now that if you turn off the option in:
transmission preferences > peers > change peers (PEX) in public torrents [off]
you get more bandwidth for browsing etc.
I had transmission working while opening the forum to write this message.
I jump through several sites (with safari cache and history cleaned) with no problems.
Try, and post your experience.

Re: Transmission slows down everything on network
I did go get 1.34 and try it. I still get the occasional network lockup like with later versions, but far more infrequently. So far only twice since my last posting.
However, that does make me ask whether or not Snow Leopard might be partially to blame here as well. When running just Leopard, I never had this issue with this version of the software.

Re: Transmission slows down everything on network
Well, I promised I'd be back in a few months since my original post to see if this has been addressed. I was encouraged by some of the more recent posts that seemed to indicate 1.76 addresses this issue. So I downloaded (v1.76, build 2165), installed, and fired it up.
I lost my router within 30 minutes.
So I move on to beta builds...1.80somethingorother. Same issue, although it does now take about an hour or so before it sticks a fork in my routers eye.
I tried all the suggestions here and in several other troubleshooting threads, so many I'm not even going to bother to list them all. But no matter what I do, I have dismal speeds and lose all network connectivity within 30-45 minutes of launching Transmission. Shutting it down returns my network to normal status within minutes.
See you in the spring to try with whatever version is released by then. Back to Vuze...which sucks as Transmission has such a nicer UI.

Re: Transmission slows down everything on network
Hi I have just DL the latest version and the DL stop after few seconds with an error message so i decided to test another software, the file is DL ...
It's a shame, few releases before everything was working
Edit #1:
Error message is : Permission denied (/Volume/ ...).
Edit #2:
Does someone know what is the latest beta release working ? Thanks

Re: Transmission slows down everything on network
Yes, i am used to DL on an external hard drive on FW800 but since yesterday i'm DL on my internal harddrive because since few months the hardrive is unmounting once a month, whatever is position on the chain (Initially second, right know first).
I think Transmission may be cause of this problem, i'm going to test.
Tks for the link.

Re: Transmission slows down everything on network
Since the begining of my problems, DL & unmounts, i'm a big fan of the disk utility
FYI i am on a MBP early 08, OS X up to date.
Transmission :
- Build: r10054
- Version: 1.83+
Thanks
