Can anyone help me with the speed of the web interface?

Post by Jelly4000 »

Hi all, bit of a noob here, so please bear with me.

I've always used VNC to get into my home server to monitor torrents, and that has always worked fine, although fairly slowly. I am not trying out the Transmission remote access (on Mac OS), as i assumed it would be much faster to load a few lines of html than an entire image of my screen. Strangely though, the remote interface seems even slower than using VNC. I've done the port forwarding properly (it does eventually load), but it won't load the torrents that i have running, with it sometimes saying that communication with the server has failed, and other times simply not loading anything apart from the top menu. Having run a speedtest.net test, i get around 12 MBPS download and 1MBPS upload. Not staggeringly quick, but i would imagine fast enough to load the remote access UI?

My ISP is Be Unlimited (UK)
My OS is Mac OS 10.5.2
The router is some nasty Thomson Speedtouch thing
I have a static external and internal IP, and the port forwarding seems to have worked ok.

Anyway, does anyone have any idea of why it would be so slow/not working? I've left all the options as defaults afaik.

Cheers,

The usual problem is that you are using all your bandwidth for torrenting and leave nothing for accessing the Web client... the usual solution is capping those upload/download speeds.

VNC uses more bandwidth than the Web client, so if you tested both at the same time then there must be a different cause; it could be the browser you use... oh, oh, Mac OS X means Safari, which means "doesn't work very well with Ajax", have you tried Firefox?

Thank you very much for the response :)

I have tried limiting my transfers (well, actually, they had all finished...), and here's what i found -

The initial connection time is still slow as hell (using firefox, i usually use chrome) - it takes maybe a minute to connect? On my iphone (on 3G connection) it usually stops working all together, sometimes it will eventually (after 3 or 4 minutes) load the web ui. Most of the time it then comes up with the transmission logo and "Connection Failed - could not load the server, you may need to reload the page to reconnect"
Once i had connected though (on my laptop, in a good wifi connection, using firefox), the time taken to interact with my server is very quick (much quicker than vnc), things like pausing and resuming torrents etc

It's the initial connection that is bugging me, it takes so long that my iphone usually stops loading (it is running safari of course...). Is it normal for it to be this slow to just connect to the web interface?

Thanks

If I'm right (devs know best) the web interface only downloads the entire HTML source, pictures, and all that stuff once. Then the actual use of the app is done with javascript and JSON ajax requests (which are very small and lightweight requests) so it probably doesn't seem "sluggish" once you load up initially.

I would say that your router is maxing out its connections and getting bottlenecked when trying to route your initial connection.
Perhaps limit the number of max connections in transmission to something really low, like 10, to see if that fixes it... then find a good setting like 40-50 or whatever works for your router.

With me, the initial request is also very slow, it's only the initial request , after that , it runs smooth.
1 The problems occurs with a popcornhour and also with a htpc(atom) with xbmc live installed.
2 It also occurs when I'm NOT downloading or seeding anything, so the bandtwith is not the problem.

Running linux, firefox
