Port closed on university network

Post by mleroy42 »

I have been looking through the posts all day and have not been able to find a working solution to my problem. I am currently on a university network that uses SmartFilter for blocking web content. I have been able to work around this and download torrents from tracker.example.com, but I cannot download the file through Transmission. I have no problems outside of this network and achieve download speeds in excess of 500kb/s. When I attempt to use Transmission on the university, the port is closed. I have not been able to resolve this and was wondering if anyone could help me figure out this problem. I would really appreciate any help you may have. I am using a MacBook running Mac OS X 10.5.8. Thank you very much.

Alright, I have tried using encrypted peers only. That did not work on its own. I have randomized the port and that did not work either. When I used Hotspot Shield, I was able to download and upload. However, it was really slow (~9 KB/s) downloading. The uploading speed was better (~140 KB/s). Is there any way to speed up the downloads? I tried limiting the upload speed but that did no good. I know I should be happy I was at least able to get some progress, but that seems extremely slow to me. Thanks for the input thus far.
