transmission won't quit, just hangs

i have read the threads on how it takes a long time to quit if you have a lot of torrents seeding, but firstly, i pause my torrents before quitting, and secondly, i have waited 30min and even an hour to see if it will ever quit and it still says 'application not responding' so i have to force quit. this happens everytime i quit the app & has been happening on the last several versions, and still happens with 2.01. while it's running though everything seems to be working well.

ok, thanks. repairing permissions is something i do regularly just to let you know. well, i reinstalled fresh copy & it works fine using my old 'Application Support/Transmission' folder and new prefs file but when i used my old prefs file (org.m0k.transmission.plist) the problem came back and it wouldnt quit. btw, this file does not exist on my system: org.m0k.transmission.LSSharedFileList.plist

so i then took screenshots of all my prefs, quit the app, trashed the prefs file (org.m0k.transmission.plist), re-did all my prefs manually, and the problem still occurs. after trashing prefs the first time i launched it and quit to make sure it was working before i re-did my prefs. so it seems like there must be a pref combination that causes the app to hang when quitting b/c i redid them all manually.

you mean "use DHT for public torrents" in the peers prefs? it was checked as default so i unchecked it. is this going to affect anything i'm seeding or downloading? i'm not sure what DHT is.

anyway, after unchecking DHT it still hangs when i quit. would a crash report help? (assuming it creates one upon force quit)


also, just to let you know, the only prefs i customized are:

transfers: set folders for: default location, keep incomplete files in, and checked 'start transfers' option (this may have been default setting though)
groups: set 5 different groups, all w/ custom location and 1 criteria field
bandwidth: customized speed limit mode's UL/DL settings
network: checked randomize port & auto map port options

with all these prefs as default it quit with no problem.


wait, after launching again and quiting right afterward it worked, with DHT unchecked. i'll need to let it run for a while though w/ torrents and see if it still works later.

ok, well i disabled the check for updates option, but where is Growl? i dont have a sys pref for that.

no, the only time i get the hang is when i quit the app. otherwise everything works totally fine.

hmm, well i cant do that as i have over 1,000 torrents. maybe it can't handle this many?

but as i stated before i pause all torrents before quitting, and have waited even an hour with them all paused and it still hangs. when i had 700 or 800 torrents it quit immediately w/ no problem, so with a couple hundred more, wait over an hour? i'm also on a quad-core mac pro w/ fast RAID drives.

I'm having the exact issue described by 'shape'. It has been happening since 2.02 or maybe 2.01. Anyone has more info on this or what has changed since then?
Transmission just hangs, every time I want it to quit. I did a fresh install and did not even touch one of the preferences and added no torrents. Even in this 'fresh' empty state, quitting the app causes a hang and Force Quit becomes necessary..

well, the last few times i quit it actually worked ok. i'm using 2.03 now so i'll report back w/ any updates.

i just installed 2.04, ran it for a while, then quit the app without pausing any torrents and it quit fine w/ no problems and pretty quickly as well so i would definitely try the update.

The wont quit/hangs bug has been around for a while, at least for me. If you overload the I/O cache TM ungracefully stops responding for a minute or so, and occasionally after an unfreeze, all communication seizes up and the only solution is to restart TM, however it'll hang on quit. Sometimes if TM is under heavy load but has not frozen, and I try to quit, it exhibits the same behavior. It's probably related to the infamous cache-and-or-memory-allocation-breaks-anything-and-everything bug, other symptoms include sudden thread closure in the support forums.

Turn off the Remote Control in Transmission. This was the solution for me (with v2.04).
