Block List URL ?

Post by TheJTizzle »

Just updated and see the auto update block list is now all manual based... :( Can any one share a URL to get a block list like before since there isn't one by default now. Thanks.

One reason for removing the default was because the Transmission team doesn't really know what goes into those blocklists. For the same reason, I can't recommend a blocklist in the forums.

If you Google for "blocklist" and "URL" you'll quickly find several that you can evaluate and decide for yourself.

I googled it and I found a few lists but I keep on getting the same error when I try to update it: "the specified blocklist file did not contain any valid rules" but from what I can tell the files inside is in the "p2p" file format that Transmission is supposed to support... ?

If you feel you can't recommend any specific list, at least could you provide an example of how someone would load a list of his/her choice like this one: http://www.iblocklist.com/list.php?list=bt_level1

Thanks!! :)

Block List URL for non-geeks

Post by oldguy »

I'm sorry -- but the easy-to-use-just-works thing just got blown outa the water. I've done your requested search and tried a buncha things that just didn't work ---- like list manager programs with mystery setups and for the other guys platforms --- my mail program failing due to blocks --- time-outs -- failed to update ---- :x

If you don't like us using your bandwidth --- how about as a default redirecting us to the source of whatever you used to use. No, I don't know how effective that 200k+ list was ---- but it beats "zero" and it did not interfere with my other stuff. If the tech-heads think they have something better -- good for them -- and for you for letting them "go for it" ---- but please don't leave us mere mortal users hanging ---

Some people at http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/19378/transmission found a couple of URLs that work.

Code: Select all

http://www.bluetack.co.uk/config/level1.gz
That's where the original Transmission used to point to (pre 2.11 I think). Chuck that in your URL field, whack return, then press [Update].

super-poussin: that one will stay alive only until the spring linux distro cycle. Older versions of Transmission don't allow the blocklist URL to be edited, so I I remove the link now it'll break things for all the Linux users running 2.04.

I would not recommend that URL because its days are numbered.

Good block lists are still available from the http://www.bluetack.co.uk site, and I was able to find at least three that currently still work. These include the following text and DAT versions:

Code: Select all

http://www.bluetack.co.uk/config/level1.gz
http://www.bluetack.co.uk/config/nipfilter.dat.gz
http://www.bluetack.co.uk/config/pipfilter.dat.gz
The above block lists showed the following on 2011-09-13:
  • 220,350 rules (level1.gz)
    250,632 rules (nipfilter.dat.gz NORMAL)
    197,298 rules (pipfilter.dat.gz PARANOID)
You can also download the above files manually from http://blocklistpro.com/download-center/p2p-ip-filters/ and http://blocklistpro.com/download-center ... ts-mirror/ to install into a special Transmission folder as explained in the wiki at https://trac.transmissionbt.com/wiki/Blocklists. Make sure you read the IP Filters Sources list FAQ and the BISS IP Blocklists FAQ for more detailed information about these block lists. For P2P downloading, I suggest using one of either the nipfilter.dat or pipfilter.dat versions since they already contain the level1 list and more.

Please note that I used these block lists with Transmission 2.13 (11501) and the lists may not work with other Transmission versions.

Good Luck.
