Deselected torrent files still download

When opening a multi-file torrent, after deselecting files I'm finding the deselected files in the torrent download folder as "placeholders". By this I mean the unchecked files are created in the torrent download folder with the checked downloaded files, they are also the correct size, but without being downloaded. In the past using a torrent client like Azureus (vuse) the files are excluded and only the check files are downloaded and in the torrent download folder. Any ideas why this is and when this will be changed?

I have already created a solution for this and similar issues in trac ticket #532. If you can apply patches and compile from source, more testing on macosx would be greatly appreciated.
