port is closed but downloading works!
port is closed but downloading works!
hi all !
this is the first time i am posting to this forum!
so i had had loved the Transmission client from time i used it with ubuntu and so when i recently shifted to the mac OS i immediately installed the Transmission client.
now while i have been able to download successfully, while checking out the settings i noticed that the port is closed !
i am perplexed because in the past i have never been able to connect whenever the port was closed.
now the few downloads i carried out did take quite some time to complete. so i am just wondering if this has something to do with the fact that port is closed and yet the downloads are working.
my laptop is the usual MBP 13 inch that i got 2 months ago.
thanks!

Re: port is closed but downloading works!
well actually i did check many of the steps listed here but the port is still closed.
and sorry but i never got around to becoming an ubuntu expert so am not really sure how to manage this.
in fact, some of the steps listed in the help section seem to be for the earlier version of the OS - 10.5...
i am currently using the latest one 10.6.6. e.g. in the "how to forward port section" step 3 say that i should check up on "Set access for specific services and applications" but no such option is listed in anywhere where this seems to indicate it should be in my Firewall settings.
does it matter if i just let it be? i mean Transmission is somehow working fine, both downloading and uploading files. can i have problems of some kind later on if i just let the port be closed for now even though its working ok?
thanks

Re: port is closed but downloading works!
Asos,
That is just the listening port for other peers to find you. Your actual file download/upload occur on different port #'s.
If you have "Automatically Map Port" selected under Transmission.app > Preferences > Network, you should be fine.
If you want the Port to be open and make your insides smile
you will need to forward the port on your ROUTER or place your computer under DMZ in the router settings (most mac users have a time machine?).
If you let us know what router hardware (model number) you are running, we can try to walk you through this.

Re: port is closed but downloading works!
thanks bulljit!
i checked and the situations is exactly as you say.
well i am ok with this if you say it won't effect my download speed. but does this create problems for other people who i might be sharing files with?
i am using a DSL wi-fi AT&T modem.
thanks!

Re: port is closed but downloading works!
Port is closed with new v 2.20b4. I reverted to v 2.13 and the port is open again.

Re: port is closed but downloading works!
Hi,
I'm new to Transmission but I'm familiar with port forwarding etc. I can download alright but I cannot upload (required by my torrent site). I run an Airport Extreme and use an Airport Express to extend my network. I've done all my port forwarding and firewall settings to no avail and the port continues to be closed in Transmission (btw, my torrent site requires that I use v2.20b3 also).
Do I need to attach the debug log? Thanks.

Re: port is closed but downloading works!
clearly there's a problem with v2.20 !
Re: port is closed but downloading works!
Log says
But "Port is closed" in Preferences and canyouseeme.org don't see any service

I see that, of cause.x190 wrote:garrych: Your Transmission log states that your port is forwarded. Do you have any type of firewall software or router setting that might be blocking external port checks?
I did test with Peer Blocking feature disabled. Same result. Tried some online port-scanners. No luck.
Don't remember this problem on 2.13
Re: port is closed but downloading works!
Router nat rules says transmission opened just UDP port.
Preferences check UDP?
Preferences check UDP?
Re: port is closed but downloading works!
Filed a bug #4006
Re: port is closed but downloading works!
Try setting your modem as a bridge, if it is the preliminary NAT, it may be blocking ports.
Search on how to configure your particular model that way.

Re: port is closed but downloading works!
Problem could be solved by manually mapping port forward and disabling UPnP (Natpmp) preference.
Re: port is closed but downloading works!
This problem is not the router problem.
I had two routers from different manufacturers.
I was try different settings — I turn on and off all possible settings.
But while uTorrent is running and says that the ports are open, in same time Transmission writes that the ports are closed.
This is the problem of Transmission!
But support can not or will not understand that!
This happens with Transmission from installation of Snow Leopard!
At 10.5, the same version of Transmission works fine and defines ports as open!

See Ticket 4006 and add some comments.kukuiski wrote:This problem is not the router problem.

I've built 2.21 with only tcp port mapping and it works flawlessly.
