Web Browser stops while Transmission is running
As long as Transmission is open my web browser will slow down to the point that every page I try to load times out. Even if I'm not downloading much. I actually paused all my downloads and it didn't help. I have to shut down Transmission then restart my browser for it to work normally again. I use Firefox or Rockmelt for my web browser. I'm running Mac OS 10.5.8. Is there a fix for this? Am I doing something wrong? I've been using transmission for years on this computer with no problems. The only change I've made is that I'm connecting to the internet wirelessly instead of with a cable, but my computer is getting full strength signal. Please let me know. Thanks.

Re: Web Browser stops while Transmission is running
I'll try that but it does this even when nothing is downloading or uploading. If I have all torrents paused it still disables my web browser.
Re: Web Browser stops while Transmission is running
I have the exact same problem, it's really bizarre. I've tried Chrome, Firefox and Safari, the same thing happens with all three. Also, if I don't have a browser open but try to use Transmission, the DL speeds are nowhere near where they should be with my connection. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Re: Web Browser stops while Transmission is running
I have the same issues. I have tryed so many different things to resolve this with no success. Transmission seems to use all the available bandiwdth of my connection, even if it is paused. Speed limits give no result in this issue. All the rest of the network suffers. No other computer, no other internet application can work at the same time when transmission is open. I have changes preferences in transmission, have set up my router's QoS, have tried for weeks but I can't have the problem resolved. Something looks to work when I disable the Automatically map port pref. of transmission, by also having the corresponding settings of the QoS of my router, but this also looks unstable, because I might see some limited use of the bandiwidth from transmission and the rest of network might work sufficient for a while, however this is not for long time, and the previous state with the suffering work returns. I am thinking to try different BTclients as soon as my current downloads finish, as well to try a different router. When I have any news I will be back to post here...
Re: Web Browser stops while Transmission is running
I am having the same problem. It started right after I downloaded 2.20. Now when I launch transmission after about 1 minute all the browsers on BOTH my computers essentially freeze(one wifi, one hardline). My network diagnostic says my internet is working fine but no pages load. After I quit transmission is takes about 5-10 minutes for everything to return to normal. Any help would be appreciated.
Re: Web Browser stops while Transmission is running
I found that by disabling the firewall protection through the gateway on my modem (Cisco EPC3825), I was able to get transmission and browsers to work simultaneously. Might be worth a try for you guys. I'm still not entirely happy with DL rates, but will keep working on this.
Re: Web Browser stops while Transmission is running
I went to preferences and changed the Global download rate to 100kbps and upload rate to 50kbps and the problem has stopped. I guess even when you aren't up or downloading anything transmission is still using up alot of bandwidth.

Re: Web Browser stops while Transmission is running
hi,
I've also been battling this issue for the last couple of months and it has been one of the main obstacles to my migration to Ubuntu. Searching reveals that the issues has been reported as far back as 2006 and that users usually resort to some kind of workaround ( use a different browser, use a different torrent client, strangle that bandwidth, use 2 pc's etc.. ). I know squat about Linux or the internal workings of routers and so on, but what is clear is that this issue does not occur in Windows, I hate to say it, but Windows handles the sharing of torrent clients and web browsers successfully, you can download at high bandwidth and browse with firefox at the same time. Don't get me wrong I hate Windows, which is why I'm taking the time to write here. From the time I've spent reading about this issue on forums it appears that there is a classic case of programmer bug denial happening, I'm sure that there is nothing incorrect or 'broken' within Transmission, but that there is a more fundamental design issue with Linux which causes the problem. I really hope someone who knows all about this stuff can dig down and try and understand what causes this bottleneck to occur. If they can do this and fix the problem somewhere ( be it within the way applications share connections / bandwidth or improving a the behaviour of a client to workaround the problem ) then they will be doing the community a huge favour. I imagine that this is a major issue for the uptake of Linux. For many people the first thing they will do is install something like Ubuntu, then browse and then torrent, they will then think it is broken, get frustrated and go back to their previous system. Your hopefully of a real investigation.

Re: Web Browser stops while Transmission is running
I thought I had fixed this once by turning the firewall off on my ISP-supplied router. It actually did seem to work briefly, but whenever I am downloading something with plenty of seeds, and the speed creeps up, all other internet services, browsing, email, twitter, freeze up. I tried limiting number of peers and bandwidth with only minimal improvement.
Tonight I tried Vuze: problem solved. I am not saying that this bug isn't hard to reproduce; I've never had this problem with Transmission before when I lived other places with other routers, and other ISPs. But this also shows that even if it's not Transmissions fault entirely, it is something they could acknowledge and address as other clients don't have the same problem.
I don't like Vuze, it's super bulky. But right now it works and I can download at full speed and type this message.

Re: Web Browser stops while Transmission is running
- Set lower global connections limit
- set fewer upload slots
- set a much lower upload limit.
These two things should fix it for most people.
Many of todays cheap ass ISP provided routers are designed for a few computer to be browsing and not much else. Bittorent can create hundreds of connections a min and just consume all the resources, EVEN if not much is being transferred.
