Delete downloaded files

Post by schwern »

I'm very happy with Transmission. It's light and fast and has all the features I want. Thank you! One thing would make it even better.

When downloading and watching large collections, an entire TV series for example, I don't have the spare hard drive space (laptop) to hold the whole thing during the download or the lengthy seeding process. I prefer to download and seed a couple seasons at a time, for example.

To that end, it would be great if I could delete files within Transmission. Transmission would then not redownload the files, they would automatically be unchecked. It would not require a lengthy re-verification process. Then I can download a season or two, watch them, seed them to completion, delete them and download the next one. This would be an option in the context menu, "Delete selected".

If that's trouble, what would be helpful would be the ability to uncheck files which are already downloaded, perhaps while paused. This at least avoids the lengthy re-verification step.

Thanks!

PS To save us some time, let me pre-rebut some common work arounds. Some are helpful, some are not, but they're all sub-optimal.

Use a bigger hard drive: Thanks! I'll let you know where to have it shipped. Oh, you mean for me to buy it? Even if I wanted to spend the money, they max out at 500 gigs for a laptop at a reasonable speed. Between music, movies, games, virtual machines, dual boots, applications, porn... half a terabyte isn't as big as it used to be.

Use an external drive: Yes, then I can only seed when I'm tethered to a very short USB cable. Result: users are less likely to seed to completion.

Clean some crap off your drive: I do on a regular basis, and use disk scanning tools to help, but it seems like shaving down the 160 gig Stargate torrent taking up a third of the drive would save a lot of space.

You can already delete files! It's easy! Right... pause the transfer, delete the files, re-verify, wait for it to finish (started it when I began this post, it's at 50% because I downloaded a few seasons ahead), uncheck all the ones that were deleted, restart the transfer. Easy! Wait... why is it downloading part of season 2 again? Did I mess something up? (For the irony impaired: replies telling me I did it wrong, while helpful for the work around, just add to the point that it is not easy).

Just deal with it! As seen from the work arounds above, I am dealing with it. But computers and software exist to make our lives easier, not for us to work harder for them. Changing Transmission so it is less work makes it even better.

Don't watch so much TV: I'll stop when you stop watching so much porn.

Thanks, I looked for a ticket and couldn't find one. I've posted an extensive "me too" to that ticket.
