Moving files - alias / symlink / hardlink - HowTo?

Post by ipanini »

Hi,

I'm in the following situation:
- An older 2013 Mac Pro, but still going strong. Monterey OS.
- External Thunderbolt harddrive case with a spinning harddrive where files were stored.
- Long time ago, several years ago, Transmission was installed and used. At that time with "some" default values for temp files and downloaded files.

A couple of years later:
- Same mac pro
- Same External Thunderbolt harddrive case.
- A new version of Transmission has been installed. New default values for temp files and downloaded files.

What happens?
- new torrents added download as expected, all is wel.
- but somehow, Transmission "knows" or "reads" the old / previously downloaded torrent files, but the files are not present in the new location

How can I fix things so that:
- Transmission will use the new settings
- But will also honor the old files being present at some other location

Can this be acomplished by:
- moving the old files to the new location
- then using an alias / symlink / hardlink in place at the old location and pointing to the new location (we are talking folders here)

What would be te best way to fix this situation?
Thanks for helping out!
