Transmission causes leopard slow death

I'm using the latest release, 1.22 I believe... and I'm still getting this problem.

Sometimes I'm lucky and I will be able to Force Quit Transmission, and then the system will come back, but today Transmission would not quit, then I started getting beachballs everywhere.

Much like everyone else describes, I could switch between windows (couldn't use expose`), I couldn't load any sites, eventually had to do a hard restart. I also lost about 3 GB of data

I've definitely noticed it is an issue if I queue up a lot of torrents, like some other people said, if I just have a couple of small torrents or just one big one, it seems fine.

This is a 2.4ghz 24" iMac on 10.5.3 by the way.

Just to add to the discussion, I'm having the same death issue. I have a 2.66GHz quad core Mac Pro with 8GB RAM and I'm saving files to an external iSCSI SAN. The fact is that only yesterday did I realize that it was Transmission that was killing my machine. I have seen this die before my eyes and I've also come back to my machine to find it dead. When it died in my arms, I was listening to iTunes, however when it died alone in an alley, iTunes was silent. I checked the crash logs, and I do not see an entry for Transmission. Any more I can help, just let me know. Thanks.

followup:

I tried running with the latest, and it still had the same problem. It ran just fine for a few hours, then I selected to quit Transmission and it resulted in an "unexpectedly quit," the system ran fine for a few hours after that but then the dreaded leopard system death happened. It's now been several days since I restarted without once launching Transmission and the problem has been gone ever since, just as was the case with the official release before.

Transmission is definitely triggering my Mac system to crash.

I'll remove SIMBL now and see if the problem persists.

SIMBL is a hack for the operating system. That is more than likely the cause of your problems.

I doubt it because I had SIMBL installed when transmission was running perfectly crash-free in 10.3.9 and also because the other people who are reporting the same problem don't all also have SIMBL installed (which I'm assuming because out of all the people who posted their logs, mine was the only one that you guys mentioned SIMBL to). But I just used EasyFind to remove every file on my system that had the string SIMBL in its file name, and I'm gonna run transmission now and we'll find out if its the culprit soon enough.

EDIT: oops, I meant 10.3.9

I launched 6235 (that's 5, NOT 6, because that was the newest I saw on the download page), double clicked two torrents to add them, then transmission gave a beachball for a long time, and then it came back and is now downloading. I'll report back with any news.

Kaboom.

I was running the latest build, and SIMBL was not installed. Transmission successfully downloaded 2 torrents, then I added 2 more torrents, and a couple of hours later leopard blew up. There's no transmission crash log because the whole system blew up. I managed to catch a few screenshots before it totally went under. There's no image posting on this forum, so if you want to see them tell me where you want me to mail them or an easy place to posts.

If those screenshots are helpful, just go to http://tinypic.com , upload the picture over there and then use the IMG tag over here.

Could we try something else? Do you have access to another Mac? If so, could you try it over there and see if Transmission also locks up?

If not, what about creating a completely new user in the computer you are using and trying using Transmission in that new user? If there's something in the system bugging Transmission, by creating a new user you should be able to run with an almost-clean system... that's unless what you have installed have been installed in a system-level instead of an user-level.

Hi, I had this exact same problem. I'll provide any information you want; Transmission really is the only BT solution that works for me so having it crash my computer is really frustrating.

For what it's worth, i haven't seen this problem since my last post. I've even started to get adventurous and i've had several torrents downloading and several more uploading at the same time and i still haven't had it lock up. Not sure what happened, whether it was a Transmission update or OS X 10.5.3 or what. I also did not have (and have never had) SIMBL or any other Input Manager hacks, if that makes any difference.

I will def report back here if it happens again though!

Anyways, first, I'd just like to say that I've been following this thread for at least 3 months now after I started getting this problem.

But after updating to 1.22 I don't see that happen anymore. I'm running 1.22(6189) and Leopard 10.5.4 (updated yesterday) without the crash. It also worked fine with 10.5.3 before the update.

But I have another problem.. my other internet activities slow down to UNusable whenever Transmission is running. Transmission runs without any problem but any other traffic is crippled.
browsing (Firefox, safari)
iTune (podcast download)
software update
etc..

So I thought of updating my Transmission with a nightly build last night.. to see if the crippling-other-internet-traffic problem would go away. And updated with Transmission-1.22+Z-svn-r6275.
And what i got was the old-beachball-slow-death-crash. I had to use the power button to turn off.
After the restart.. I immediately reinstalled the old stable version.
1.22(6189)
And no crash. Running fine now.

I'm running around 60 torrents. with about 2/3 of them seeding.

System
15" MBP 2.5GHz
4GB RAM

My router
DLink DIR-655.

PS. I have SIMBL installed, if that helps.

Just to let everyone know Transmission has been running for a few days w/o a freeze. I'm running the latest code from SVN, and I did a Build and Go in Xcode. Xcode is still up and running as well as Transmission.
