Saving to other locations gives Beachball of DEATH

I've recently had a problem where if i try to save files into a folder other than the default "Downloads" folder, i get the beachball and it just hangs forever. I have to 'force quit' the program.

Any ideas?

using Snow Leopard, Transmission 1.93 (i just tried with the beta 2.00b1 and no change)
