Maybe I don't understand how torrents work...

Hello Everyone!
This is my first time posting here, and I'm fairly new to the torrent world.
One thing I have noticed, is that my upload - is always higher then my download speed. And I know from using uTorrent (on the PC side) that wasn't the case.
If I have my speed settings for download & upload set to Unlimited - why is my download speed never exceeding my upload speed?
Also, what exactly is "Ratio"? My ratio is "2.22". I don't really even know what that means, but I think it has to do with download & upload speeds.
Another thing, if I set my download speed to unlimited and I limit my upload speed to something low - not only does the upload speed lower, but also my download speed takes a huge hit in speed as well.
Can someone kinda give me a "Torrent 101" course and tell me what I'm missing?
Thank you in advance!
