Roadmap and features in general

Post by josephj »

I've been using Transmission (gtk version on Linux) for a year or two and really like it. I get the latest stable versions from the ppa (currently for kubuntu karmic).

Sometimes I make suggestions or point out problems.

For a number of enhancements that I'd like to see, I've been told that they're already in the Mac version and that there is a priority for pulling them from the "client" code (for lack of a better term) and putting them into the core so all versions can access them.

I was wondering when to look for such changes. I know the work is all volunteer ... , so I'm not being impatient. I'd just like to know if something I want might be coming in 2.40, etc..

To try to answer this, I spent some time looking through https://trac.transmissionbt.com/roadmap.
This was very interesting, but in my very brief look, I didn't find anything that looked like a Mac to everybody conversion issue.
Also, this is a very atomistic view of development. Step by step as things are proposed, discussed, and, possibly, implemented.

Is there somewhere that offers a more global view - the general direction the project is headed in - that would answer questions such as mine (above)?

I am not currently a developer (I used to be a professional programmer) although I do have a very small project of my own (coded in bash).
When I was looking through the tickets in the roadmap area, I was wondering who is qualified to add to these items? Just developers who could actually implement these things or also end users who see the value in certain issues and want to make suggestions or influence the developers' priorities. And, if you don't have to be a developer, how do you get access to posting?

Thanks.

It depends on which enhancements, specifically, you're referring to. You haven't said yet :)

No. Decisions are made largely on a release-by-release basis based on what users are asking for the most, so a global view doesn't exist.

Only the development team should set milestones for tickets... otherwise this gig becomes an unpaid job for the developers. However, patches are usually welcomed and will often speed a ticket's feature/bugfix into Transmission.

Thanks for the reply. I saw your name often associated with new ideas.

I think I saw a ticket related to the second one, but I'm not sure if it was in the 2.20 or no milestone list and it didn't say anything about the rest of that panel.

I also saw a Mac screen shot somewhere that showed a map of which blocks had been downloaded. This is functionally useless for an end user, but it's great eye candy. I wouldn't request it as a new feature, but if it's already there and just needs a bit of tweaking to work with gtk, it would be nice.

and this one is just something I'd like:

Sometime, very recently, the main window was changed to resize smaller and that's great. I still want that for the properties windows so a torrent with one or two peers displayed doesn't take up half of my screen. (I usually shade them to get around this now, but it requires extra fiddling.)

Along the same lines in general, I am noticing a small bug and would like to report it. How do I do that the "right" way?
It involves the gui ignoring input when certain conditions occur. I'd like to be able to report it without having to build from svn if possible.

As for milestones, I didn't even think of adding a new one. I just wanted to be able to say "What about doing it this way?" on an existing one (from an end user's point of view - not from knowing how the code works, etc.). And, I saw at least one issue (it doesn't matter which one) where the comment was something like "Nobody wants this, so it's being canceled." I'd like to be able to say, "I want it." That sort of thing.

Just thought of this:

if I do go to the effort of building from svn, how do I report any issues I may encounter?

You can either comment on an existing ticket, or create a new one.
