2.20 Hanging on large download.

Post by ennui »

OS X 10.6.6
Transmission 2.20
150GB of free space on HD, 4GB memory

I can reliably re-create this simply by adding the torrent. The file in question is ~84GB, however, I've only selected to download approximately 14GB of the entire file. Transmission downloads 10 to 20MB before the UI becomes unresponsive, beachballing. I have iStat Menus installed so I can see network activity, and downloading halts as well. All other apps in OS X are still responsive, and CPU usage is low, so whatever Transmission is hanging on, it isn't eating up CPU cycles. I have over 150GB of free space, so that's doesn't appear to be the problem.

I let it go for about 5 minutes before I Force Quit. Any suggestions?

I have a global download limit set at 2MB/s. Otherwise I don't use the Speed Limit settings.

Why would it only start pre-allocating all of that after it's downloaded several MB? I actually had a similar problem in the summer of 2009, for whatever the latest version of Transmission was back then, when I tried to download a 50GB torrent... except that time Transmission would bring the entire Mac to a standstill, forcing a hard reboot.

My workaround for this (and any large download) is to use uTorrent on my Windows machine. I wish it wasn't so.

I made those changes as you said. I already had it set for 1 active transfer at a time. 2MB/s already is about ~60% of my connection (downloads can max out at 3.5MB/s), but I went ahead and dropped the limit to 1MB/s.

Transmission downloaded 20.4 MB before the UI froze and network activity halted. Perhaps a minute later, activity resumed. Then it stopped again. So I see that it does work intermittently, but it's still way too slow.

Is this a known bug?

Boston was giving me better performance than the server nearest to me, so I used that.

I will run Disk Utility and get back to you.
