How often do I need to update my blocklists??

Here is the FOOL PROOF WAY TO DO IT!
I used info from the boards here and some forums and i've made a little something for you. These are the same steps i took and successfully have multiple peer blocker lists. AND THEY ARE WORKING SUCCESSFULLY!
Go to: http://www.iblocklist.com/lists.php

1. copy the URL link you desire from i-blocklist.com (its the link on the far right column- not the websites link!!!) http://img215.imageshack.us/i/iblocklist.png/
2. open transmission -> preferences -> peers http://img820.imageshack.us/i/transmissionh.png/
3. paste the url into the URL bar and click "update" (download should be visible)
4. On mac finder bar (no program selected) click on "go" -> "go to folder"
5. enter " ~/Library/Application Support/Transmission " http://img846.imageshack.us/i/gotofile.png/
6. select the blocklist folder *(notice that there is only one "blocklist.bin" folder? That is the blocklist of the current URL that you pasted into Transmission. Transmission will always make this file the generic URL updated .bin file) You don't want that unless you plan on just having one blocklist.
7. click and drag the blocklist out of the folder and onto your desktop! Rename it "(any name) blocklist.bin"

8. Rinse and repeat for the other blocklist URLs you wish to use from the site. (i used 6) And also, whenever you finish with however many URLs you use, close Transmission before going to step 9.

*** Side Note: because you are doing this via transmission and not a program (peerguardian, peerblocker, etc.) you do not have to worry about it blocking IPs when you go about your daily computer routine. THIS JUST AFFECTS TRANSMISSION AND WHO YOUR PEERS ARE!!!

**Basically by doing this (took me 10 mins to do 6 blocklists-not bad) you are having transmission do the necessary conversion technique and are not leaving any chance to human error. Let the program do this for you! No errors whatsoever when you do it this way.

9. After you have done this for your desired blocklists (making sure each has a different name before the affix "-blocklist.bin", then go back to the blocklist folder (step 4 & 5)
10. click and drag each renamed " -blocklist.bin" file (on ur desktop) back into the folder. http://img839.imageshack.us/i/renamedbins.png/
11. Open up transmission, select "window" -> "message log" http://img251.imageshack.us/i/transmssg.png/ (click on the bottom left of that window and select "info" instead of "error" or "debug" http://img64.imageshack.us/i/transmission3.png/ and look at the status of your peer block list. It should say on the right-hand side: peer blacklist "level 1blocklist.bin" has 213046 inquiries (ip addresses) and so on so forth- for the other blocklists you may have added. http://img339.imageshack.us/i/transmission2.png/

Update whenever you feel it is prudent. I use a 5 day cycle. For manual update just put the lists in text form in to the blocklist folder (~/Library/Application Support/Transmission/blocklists) and T will update the .bins on restart. You can then trash the text files. Or, you can torture yourself in 11 steps as above.

Thanks to both of you for your responses. I am sorry but I don't know exactly what you mean by putting "the lists in text for in the blocklist folder". Do you mean by that to just copy and past the blocklist you choose, for example for level 1: http://list.iblocklist.com/?list=bt_lev ... eformat=gz

So just put each link in the blocklist folder and restart the computer after that? Can it really be that simple?

Gears button->Preferences->Peers Tab I don't remember what release it first appeared in but it should be in 2.2x and higher if I recall.

No, you put the unzipped file (double-click the .gz file) in the blocklist folder and restart Transmission, not the computer. To get the .gz file on to your Desktop (or Download location), you paste the URL in to your browser address bar and hit enter. If it loads as a browser page instead of giving you the file, then select "File->Save Page As…". On OS X, the "Update" button is right below the URL bar in Prefs->Peers. This only updates the loaded URL which also can be auto-updated weekly.

OK, so I copied the url and pasted it in my browser address bar; it then opens in Textedit and I "save as" to my desktop. I then drag it into my blocklist folder, but the file type is plain text and no longer bin like all the others. I'm guessing thats not right, or is it?

I just realized that the text files are converted to bin files upon restarting transmission(as stated above). Thanks for all the help I think I'm all set now.

concatblocklist.py
I've written a small python script to automatically download and merge all your p2p format block-lists.
Currently it's for OSX only, but if anyone wants to modify it for the win/*nix crowd, they're more than welcome.
It works by pulling URLs from a user-defined list, unpacking any gzip files (only gzip is supported), and concatenating them into one mega file within the /blocklists/ folder. Because I wrote this with iblocklist.com in mind, concatblocklist.py treats every downloaded file as a gzip by default, but skips unzipping for each file with the ".txt" suffix.

Here's how to use it:
1) Make a list of every file URL (eg http://list.iblocklist.com/?list=bt_lev ... eformat=gz)
2) Save said list as a plaintext file, following every URL with a newline. Save this file somewhere safe (eg /Application Support/Transmission/)
3) Run concatblocklist.py, supplying the path to the list file as an argument. (eg '$ python concatblocklist.py ~/Librar*/Appli*/Trans*/blocklist')
4) When concatblocklist.py is finished, open Transmission to create a new binary file.
5) I recommend adding concatblocklist.py to your login procedures so that your blocklist stays up-to-date.
