Torrents and external hard drive

New to torrents and I am using the u one. I want to change over to transmission. My question is I have movies on the u and on the external hard drive, I try using the external on my tv and it says that there is nothing there in the torrent list. The computer says there is but I think it is just the short cut. I want to be able to download movies so that I can play them on my tv. What the heck am I doing wrong. Please help me because I am an idiot when it comes to this. Thank you.
