Trans daemon stuck on receiving metadata

Hello everyone,
Transmission daemon (on a headless ubuntu server 12.04) gets stuck on "receiving metadata" and hangs there forever.
After investigating, the peer-port is reported as closed by the web interface.
Opened the port in my firewall, checked it with GRC and other tools and it is reported open.
Moved the port to 51412, restarted the daemon and still nothing.
Any ideas what else should I look for ? Are there any error logs for this tool ?
This setup was functioning OK, until someone inadvertently unplugged everything out from the power outlet.
