FreeNAS help with permissions please

Post by NeilP »

I have been using FreeNAS and Transmission for 6 or 7 years..maybe longer.
It stopped working about 6 months ago, had to replace HDD and just can not get it to run again.

Built new NAS box with 0.7.2 Sabanda (revision 8191)

Trouble is that the default permissions when setting up FreeNAS do not work and it has been so long I just can not remember how to set the permissions to work to allow Transmission int hr NAS box to write to its own HDD's.

I seem to remember that the FreeNAS GUI is not enough to set permissions..but at a loss to remember how to do it.

Does this ring any bells with any one ? can any one point me in the correct direction to get transmission working again on a freeNAS box

I am afraid if it was that simple, then I would have already done it. I am not totally new to all this and I do know how yo use a search and read FAQs etc but if that does nto help and I am at a loss I make a post.

I should have perhaps made it more clear..it is the old FreeNAS ..0.7.2...now called NAS4Free in new versions..as the FreeNAS name has been taken over by a new development

It was not a permission issue a all..it was something that still is unknown
As it turns out, it was probably a poltergeist.

There was no other reason for the damn thing to suddenly stop working and never want to get going again. Every function of the the NAS box worked apart from torrent server d/loading. Even after a complete rebuild it would not work with that main board , yet the same HDD's with same settings in another box worked perfectly. Eventually rebuilt a totally new machine with the same HDD and same settings and it worked perfectly.

Here is the story.

Been on FreeNAS since..I suppose 2004/05 something like that 0.69 I think.

over the past years built maybe 10-20 or more FreeNAS & now a NAS4 Free box or two . I had a look at the 'new' FreeNAS and came back to NAS4Free.

So had this latest machine working for maybe 2-3 years with only minor tinkering, like adding a new HDD, new PSU etc. It lived Stuck away in the attic with a home brew remote power on system, done via BIOS "Power on after Power failure" and X-10 remote system and a Belkin UPS. It was used solely for Bit torrent; one HDD for boot/torrent resume data, one for downloaded data storage and one small 8-gb 'other storage' HDD

So anyway, a few months ago ..it stopped working..old torrents would show in green on the webGUI, but new torrents would not start. I had not made any changes to the router, all port forwarding OK, no changes to the FreeNAS box config either. AFP and CIFS sharing to local machines on the network all still worked OK.

Spent a day or more rebuilding it twice or three times. I tried restoring backup config files and also complete manual config rebuild from scratch. Clean installs each time. Tried putting different HDD's in...
Re flashed the the machine BIOS, and router firmware in case that was corrupt. Still torrents would not start..private music tracker and public trackers, same problem each time.

Re downloaded torrent files, ran Transmission on the local Mac machine, on a Win XP machine and also on a Win XP Virtual Machine within the Mac. Everything worked fine on each method, so i was pretty sure I coudl rule out ISP blocking or port forwarding issues.....torrents worked all the time. but on the FreeNAS box..no way .

Built up another machine ..so now my living room getting a bit crowded...three screen system on the Apple Mac, another screen for the faulty FreeNAS 0.7 box, another screen for the new build FreeNAS 0.7 box, plus keyboards for each system..oh and the laptop.

Built the new machine...same version of FreeNAS 0.7.2 Sabanda (revision 8191) same config as the old machine...Bit torrent worked perfectly What the F**k ???

Stripped both old and new machines down and swapped HDD's. Working New machine drives to old machine..old drives to the new machine.

Re installed both systems...keyboards and monitors along side each other , exact same config on each machine..page for page, exact..Users, permissions, masks, using chmod and chown on the console on each machine to open up the torrent data drives for Transmission ownership and 777.

Yet again the new machine worked...old machine ..not a hope.
I reset router, all firewalls off, BT specifically allowed then not allowed, .ports forwarded / not forwarded. new machine always did as expected...old one NOPE BT never worked AFP file sharing and disk access just perfect..but no F..ing BT download.

The old machine worked perfectly for a year or more doing sterling BT work..then it just stopped.

These bloody machines do have intelligence I am telling you ..they just get bored and stop working just to spite and annoy us I am sure.

So went to bed happy last night that I finally did have a a working new BT machine again. Final check of e-mail from the iPhone last night before I went to bed..iPhone connected via home Wi-Fi net to the router...WPA2..all working fine.

Wake up this morning..and all WiFi devices refusing to connect to Wi-Fi, when last night all was fine. two 30/30/30 reboots of router this morning and reconfig from cold and finally I have got WiFi back..

I think I have a f..ing poltergeist in my electric's I really do.

Oh yes..the old BT box and m/b...even the PSU and case..all given a bloody good seeing to with a vey large long handled 'sledge' hammer

I am sure I'll get a chance to try that in future.
