New to torrents

Hey guys.
I'm new to torrents, i know how to use them but don't know much about the settings etc. I was talking to a mate of mine today and he said unless you change it in the settings from where people seed from they can access your entire hard drive.
How do i change this? I looked in the preferences and could not find it anywhere. Any help will be GREATLY appreciated.
