Transmission unstable on OSX 10.5.6

Hi everyone, I did the right thing before posting this and did searches to try to find help for the specific problem I am having, so I hope someone can help.
I have a MacBook Pro with 10.5.6, and until recently I had an iMac 2.4GHz with the same OS. In the last 2, nearly 3 months, Transmission has been freezing, and occasionally causing the whole system to lock, forcing a hard power off. I have absolutely no clue about how bandwidth and Port settings etc might affect the performance of the app, so maybe someone could help me out, or let me know if they've been having the same problems and if they managed to solve them..
Before the updates of the last 3 months, Transmission was working perfectly.

this seems to me like a CPU problem and most likely it is the same problem as in this thread:
