Port is closed

Post by tinocordes »

I have a problem with downloading and finding an open port.
I have checked different ports on www.canyouseeme.org but without any luck.

Here is the debug output ...
2009-04-21 23:05:17 -0400 port-forwarding.c:116 [Info] Port Forwarding: Closing port 50003 on ::
2009-04-21 23:05:17 -0400 port-forwarding.c:116 [Info] Port Forwarding: Closing port 50003 on 0.0.0.0
2009-04-21 23:05:17 -0400 net.c:543 [Debug] Transmission: Bound socket 8 to port 50003 on ::
2009-04-21 23:05:17 -0400 port-forwarding.c:153 [Info] Port Forwarding: Opened port 50003 on :: to listen for incoming peer connections
2009-04-21 23:05:17 -0400 net.c:543 [Debug] Transmission: Bound socket 10 to port 50003 on 0.0.0.0
2009-04-21 23:05:17 -0400 port-forwarding.c:153 [Info] Port Forwarding: Opened port 50003 on 0.0.0.0 to listen for incoming peer connections

I have the latest OS X and use a Motorolla E9 USB modem and therefore no router.
My download speed is only 20-25 kb/s but with the ports closed it is no more than 5-8 kb/s

Do you have any suggestions?

search in the build in help for port forwarding guides (No the FAQ you used is not the one I am talking about). there should be one about forwarding your router/modem and one about forwarding your firewall. If you can't find them in the build in help try to search the wiki ( trac.transmissionbt.com ) or the forums.

But I don't think I can portforward with this modem, it dosn't have a admin-page on its IP.
Any other suggestions?

There are different settings in Control Panel - Network - The modem - about DNS, WINS, Proxyservers and PPP. Can I change anything there?

? I don't know what you mean with setting in control panel? You mean when you typ in your routers IP? That is the admin-page.
Proxyservers is not the page, but I don't know what the others are.

I don't use a router the modem is connected directly with an USB-cable.

I'm talking about the OS X Control panel.

In the mac os X preferences the only thing is the firewall. But that only makes sense if you have port forwarded a port or auto port forwarded it...

The Firewall settings should be correct. Isn't there anything else I can do? It's really slow ...

Thanks!

well I don't get it why you can't port forward your modem. shouldn't it be the same way as a router?

What OS are you using tinocordes? Choose "Allow all incoming connections" in the OS X security/firewall control panel. You can set it up for specific services and applications. Is that what you are trying to do?

I'm using 10.5.6.

It's not setup to allow all incoming connections, but the third option so I can allow different services and programs. Transmission is on the list and set to allow all connections. Isn't that fine?

tinocordes:

forwarding the port in the modem is something different than forwarding it in your computer (system prf, sharing, firewall).
most of the modem allow you to forward the port (virtual server)

go to this page: http://portforward.com/
select your modem from the list
the next page demands you to select the program, transmission will not be there.
select azureus (it's the same kind of program as transmission)
follow the steps and if you need to put in a name (which I doubt) put transmission where they tell you to put azureus.
put in the port no. you want to open.
good luck!

my experience is that every modem type has its own ip address.
look at this address and try again even if its not your modem, its a motorola

Why trying different numbers? Try the number from the site link I gave you. It's on the 2nd image. (site: then you see a number)
An IP address is given to you by your internet provider. Some providers give you a static IP address, others give you a dynamic IP.
Find out what yours uses. (google for it. You know your provider)
If yours gives you a dynamic, change it in system pref. Make a screen shot of how it is set up in your network, then change the IP (how to: google for it) and put in the other numbers same as it was. (DNS servers)
