Request: Alert for Fake Torrents

Post by mike0000 »

I've noticed that many torrents are fake. When the files are opened with TextEdit they are filled with "PADDING", "XXX" or something similar. It would save a lot of time and bandwidth if there was a feature that could monitor the dl and provide an "Alert" for these fake files.

What would determine a fake torrent? Does the torrent file not run in Transmission?

Perhaps my terminology is defective. The torrents themselves are not fake, the data files they cause to be downloaded are.

This won't be done. Who's to say what's invalid? That's not Transmission's place.

Just look at the checksum. If a client sends X number of chunks that fail checksum make the assumption that they are either uploading bad data or their ISP is mangling the data. Either way, you don't want to be downloading from them any more.

We already do ban bad peers. What is being asked for it detection on if the data file is what the user wants, in which case we can't read minds.
